THE TIMES, JANUARY 12, 2017 PAGE 5 NFL P! By JOHN Times Sports Columnist This weekend, the action really heats up, as the NFL's divisional round of the playoffs gets underway. in the afternoon game this Saturday, the Seattle Seahawks travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons. Se- attle is coming off of a 26-6 victory over the Detroit Li- ons this past weekend, and seems to have rediscovered their power running game. Of all of the teams in the NFC playoffs, the Sea- hawks might just be the team that I would want to play the least. Their de- fense looks like it is round- ing back into championship form, and their offense can keep up with almost any- body. Throw in the fact that I think the Falcons are incapable of winning a big game, and you probably already know what team I am picking to advance. Prediction: Seattle 27, At- lanta 16. Kickoff is set for 3:35 on Saturday. In the night game, the Houston Texans will battle the New England Patriots. The Patriots dominated the Texans earlier this sea- son, with their third string quarterback. I can only imagine how bad the Pa- triots will beat them, with Hall of famer Tom Brady playing quarterback. In fact, New England opened up the week as a 16 point favorite, making the Tex- ans the biggest underdog in a playoff game in almost 20 years. The question isn't if the Patriots win, but how much are they going to win by. Prediction: New Eng- land 38, Houston 6. On Sunday, the game starts at the traditional J noon kickoff. In the ear- ly game, the Pittsburgh Steelers go to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs. Ear- lier this season, the Steel- ers beat the Chiefs 43-14. There isn't anything that makes me think that this John Dudek game will be any different at all. In fact, Pittsburgh is playing a lot better of- fensively, and should win this game with ease. But, there is always the playoff factor, which is huge. Some guys play great during the regular season, and some players rise to the occasion during the postseason. Un- fortunately for fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, most of the Steelers players ex- cel in the playoffs. Predic- tion: Pittsburgh 31, Kan- sas City 20. he afternoon game fea- tures the red hot Green Bay Packers, and the top seeded Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have been led. by rookie sensations Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. Even though the Packers started off this season slow, they have ran the table since midseason. Green Bay's quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been absolutely perfect during that stretch, throwing for 22 touchdowns, and 0 in- terceptions. This game will be the most entertaining of the weekend, and is truly must see t.v, for football fans. While the Cowboys have had a charmed sea- son, I have to go with the hot hand of Rodgers and the Packers. Prediction: Green Bay 38, Dallas 33. PURCHASE PHS SPORTS PHOTOS ! Spin is when the good parts of a story are played up and the bad parts are played down. The New Orleans Baby Cakes released a story about how well their new merchandise has been selling. The story had more spin on it than a ma- jor league curveball. The main way the Baby Cakes "proved" their stuff is selling better than ten cent beer is by compar- ing sales of Cakes mer- chandise to Zephyrs mer- chandise last year in the Z's final season using the Zephyrs name. Nice try Baby Cakes, but that comparison doesn't hold water. Of course the Cakes have sold more 0f their stuff than the Z's did. It was announced early last year that the Zephyrs would change their name. As a result, fans stayed away from Z's gear know- ing that next baseball season there would not be a professional baseball team named the Zephyrs in New Orleans, so they stopped buying Zephyrs merchandise. Another reason Zephyrs stuff didn't sell well was the lack of new merchan- dise. With the exception of a few new items it was mostly the same old stuff for sale in the gift shop ev- ery year. Here's another reason Cakes stuff has Outsold Zephyrs gear from last year, it's new and there's more of it. People go for what's new. Look at the Dairy Queen in Ham- mond, people have been lining up to order. Is Dairy Queen the best restaurant in Hammond? No, it's just the newest. That's why people flock to it. Once the newness wears off, it'll be treated like any other place. It's the same with Baby Cakes stuff. Plus, there's more Cakes merchandise than there was Zephyrs merchandise. The line of Cakes gear is enormous. Also, the new Baby Cakes gift shop is bigger than the old Zephyrs shop. Why do I point this out? Because Baby Cakes management would have the public believe that the new team name has been embraced by local base- ball fans and the public as a whole. It has not. Only a relative handful of people have bought Cakes stuff. Social media is one of the best ways to find out what the public thinks. Go online and see for yourself how the public has over- whelmingly rejected the Baby Cakes name.
