THE TIMES, JANUARY 23, 2014, PAGE 2 -- Like us at John Dudek Times Columnist After last week's column, I could have practically changed the date, and re-submitted this column as the recap. Oh well, every once in a while, even a blind squirrel catches a nut. In case you missed it, the matchup of the two best quar- terbacks of our generation end- ed up pretty one-sided. While Batriots Quarterback Tom Brady played mediocre at best, Peyton Manning put on a clinic. In terms of pinpoint' accuracy, as well as clock management, it was the single best game of Peyton Manning's career. I know that last statement was rather bold, but his per- formance was flawless in just about every way possible. On the other side of the football, the Broncos' defense played truly inspired football. Every time the Patriots had an opportunity to get back into the game, the Denver defense shot the Patriots down. The final score ended up be- ing 26-16, but it felt like the Broncos led by four touchdowns the entire game. In the late afternoon game, the San Francisco 49ers had the unenviable task of taking on the Seahawks in Seattle. When I said in last week's col- umn that this was going to be the most physical football game of the season, I was spot on. Every yard was earned, and nothing in this game came easy. Even when Seattle Quarterback Russell Wilson fumbled on the game's first play, San Francisco could only muster a field goal out of that golden opportunity. These two teams were so evenly matched, that the yardage total for the game (308) was identi- cal. After 15 rounds of exchang- ing heavyweight body shots, the game came down to one play. San Francisco's best wide re- ceiver, Michael Crabtree, one- on-one against Seattle's best cover guy. Colin Kaepernick launched a pass to Crabtree, and Sherman tipped the ball to his teammate at the last second to preserve the victory. Seattle 23, San Francisco 17. In next week's column, I will provide you with a preview of Super Bowl XLVIII, between the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. / BOWL The Poncbatoula Times " The Independence Times Published by The Ponchatoula Times L.L.C.
