Comparing that unique driving experience with this week's General Motor's Cadillac 2012 SRX4 presents the team a perfect opportunity to discuss exactly what a "crossover" means. The idea was to create a vehicle that would be somewhere be- tween a car and a truck. It was thought that this could become one of the fastest growing segments in the automobile universe and they were right. All auto manufactures now offer at least one crossover and Cadillac really has gotten that market niche right with this year's SRX4. The model tested had sleek silver on silver lines on the outside, officially called "Radiant Silver Metallic" on its pedigree papers. Inside it radiates Cadillac elegance. Road noise? What road noise? This has to be one of he quietest cabins on the market and that is even with the sunroof open. With the simple push of a button the panoramic sun/moon roof recedes all the way back into the rear seating compartment. Stylish: this is a good looking vehicle, inside and out. The rakish roof line gives a suggestion of speed aided by a windswept profile, and the scalloped doors and constrained use of chrome suggest refinement. A favorite touch mentioned by passengers and onlook- ers included the rear taillights that give homage to the wonderful tail-fins of older Caddy's. Inside, everything is just as it should be in a Cadillac. French stitched leather inserts and wood grain trim flank a dashpanel that has an Art Deco look. The brain trust in Michigan have the brass to present riders with a long sassy air conditioning grill flanked by a classy analog clock. From the center of the backseat my usual surly backseat companion opined, "It's retro-cool, I feel like I'm approaching the palace of the Wizard of Oz."
