MeMAHON Times On Wheels Columnist I do not know for a certainty what exactly the female half of this test drive team is going to write about the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, but I have a feeling we are not going to agree. Let's see. The premise of our new car automotive coverage is that we both drive the same vehicle over the course of a week, and without peeking at each other's columns (until it is too late) we go to press. It blows my mind reading what my lady's impres- sions are, what she thinks is important. Needless to say, she notices things that escape my attention completely, and the opposite is true. Judging by passing remarks, I believe she will come down fairly opposite of what I have to say about this excellent ve- hicle. One element that skews the discussion is that the EPA start- ing in 2008 changed its method of determining gas mileage and the change results in miles-per- gallon estimates that are not nearly ,as high as in past years using EPA's old system. If you want'to have a better look at how any vehicle per- forms using both methodolo- gies, you can do so by going to this Internet address: httl /.// www.fueleconomy, gov/feg/rat- ings2008.shtml Then click on "Compare Old and New MPG. I say this because the Toyota Highlander Hybrid for 2008 is rated by EPA with a seemingly stingy 27 miles-per-gallon driv- ing in city traffic (where its elec, tric motors do more of the work and the stop-and-go actually builds more electrical power) and 25 mpg on the open road. Using that web site, I note that under the old method of figuring gas mileage, the small- er 2007 Highland Hybrid 4WD was rated for 31 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway. Be that as it may, as an en- vironmentalist I like the feeling of "driving green" but I must tell you that the brilliance of the Toyota hybrid is that it really doesn't feel any different than driving a Highlander equipped with a traditional gas-burning engine. I suspect my wife and colleague to disagree. We'll see. Like her, I believe we all wish a crossover automobile platform-based mid-size SUV would provide all the extra seat- ing and cargo space and still ri- val Toyota's Prius 5-seat sedan for gas mileage. If gas mileage is at the top of your list of pri- orities (which it may well be for daily commuters), buy Prius. But if it's compromise you seek, Highlander Hybrid for 2008 de- serves your attention. Highlander gives you that el- evated seating associated with SUVs and it is roomier. Highlander follows the Toy- ota mantra of being built for safety, even more essential in a vehicle destined to serve as transportation for precious hu- man cargo, boasting a segment- PLEASE SEE PAGE 4-A WIll!
