,,IE PONCHATOULA TIMES, APRIL 28, 2011, PAGE 2 .PARKER LAYR1SSON Attornev t Lvv Auto Accident Injury : 18-Wheeler Injury : Criminal Defense (985) 370-9832 Downtown Ponchatoula Dave Berwick Z's opening week By DAVE BERWICK Times Columnist What could be finer than opening day of the baseball sea- son at the "Shrine on Airline" where the New Orleans Zeph- yrs make their home? First, why should this base- ball stadium be known as "The Shrine?" Because of the way it's built. It's built like Dodger stadium with the two huge platforms going down the base lines so if a fan prefers to stand during a game the fan still has an excel- lent view. Plus as you stand at the concession stand you can turn around and see the game. The stadium is ageless; it looks like it was built last year. Some say that Dodger Sta- dium, even though its over 50 years old, is still the best base- ball stadium ever built. Zephyr Stadium is built the exact same way as Dodger Stadium. It tru- ly is a shrine. Dodger Stadium is much larger and that's the problem it can hold 60,000 people, way to big for me. I like the fact that Zephyr Stadium was built for at the most 15,000 people. But it can hold 10,000 people quite comfortably. Friday night April 15, which was opening night, the 10,000 who attended were the perfect size crowd. After all, one doesn't want to go to a game with too few peo- ple in attendance and going to a game with the place packed is no good either. So 10,000 people at the game was just the right size crowd, and the next game which was on Saturday, had 9,000 spectators. The crowd was just the right size. Then there is the parent club. Everyone must have parents and the'Florida Marlins are per- fect parents. This baseball orga- nization is on the way up. They are in the process of building a new stadium in Miami. The team is in the National League Eastern Division which means it has to compete with the fight- ing Phillies who just happen to be the odds. On the favorite to win the World Series. The Marlins are building a world class organization and the Z's are lucky to be a part of it. On opening night Friday April 15 the great musician Irving Mayfield played the Na- tional Anthem under a beauti- ful full moon. Then the N.O. Z's trounced the Round Rocker's. Of course after the game there was the concert and the fireworks show. And after every Friday night game there will be a con- cert and fireworks show. The Z's pitcher on opening night at 'The Shrine" was a young man named Tom Koehler and you can bet your last dollar he'll be pitching in the Majors soon. The Z's first baseman Josh Kroegar cracked a mammoth home run in the second inning and you can believe he'll be playing in the Major leagues soon. :The Z's lost the next three games but I've never seen a baseball team luckier than that bunch from Round Rock. I'm off to a good start atten- dance: wins catching three of the first four. I can see no dif- ference between Tripl e A base- ball and Major League baseball. But there is a big difference in what you pay. The Z's ticket will cost eight dollars and a Major League ticket will cost at least $4o. Anyway, it's going to be a long season and I hope to see you at "the Shrine on Airline." For the first time in the series history, EA Sports, the company that produces the widely successful video game, will be letting the fans vote for the cover athlete. It started off with a player from every team, pitted against each other in a '2Ylarch Mad- ness" style tournament bracket. After weeks of voting, it has come down to two of the most unlikely players possible, Cleve- land Browns running back Pey- Bonnets FROM PAGE 1 fessional music were Eddie Ve- atch, Carl LeBlanc, and Vernon Severin. All bonneted girls were pre- sented a special gift at the award's tea held at Rockefell- er's at the strolrs conclusion, and the following ladies earned awards: Jessica Millet - Audrey Hep- burn Award for grace and so- phistication; Susanne LeBlanc - Carmen Miranda Award for organic fruity beauty; Martee Fry- Hedda Hopper Award for most flamboyant; Janet Co- chran - Red Hat Society; Dr. Karen Carter - Ingrid Berg- man Award for simple elegance of ensemble; Debbie Horton - Judy Garland Award for finest Easter bonnet, and; Angelique and Annabelle Daigle - Best Mother-Daughter Team. "King Phillip" Hextall was credited with inspiring the ton Hillis and Philadelphia Ea- gles quarterback Michael Vick. The thing that makes this so unlikely is that Hillis plays on an awful Browns team in an extremely small media market, and Vick is a convicted dog kill- ing felon. Wow, what an awesome idea this was. It is a good thing that most people will buy the game for what is in the box, not who is on the cover. Last year's cover boy was All-American golden boy Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, after he led the long suffering "Who Dat Nation" to its first Super Bowl title in franchise history. It was fitting for the Madden franchise to celebrate such a Hollywood storybook-style finish to a great season. But this year, a rela- tively unknown running back from an awful team, or the aforementioned felon?
