Cinco de Mayo honors the brav-
ery and victory of General Zara-
goza's smaller, outnumbered
army at the Battle of Puebla in
1862.
For most part, Cinco de Mayo
is more of a regional holiday in
Mexico, celebrated mostly in the
state of Puebla. There are some
limited celebrations throughout
Mexico, but nothing like that
found in Puebla.
Celebrating Cinco de Mayo
has become increasingly popu-
lar along the U.S - Mexico bor-
der and many parts across the
U.S. In these areas the holiday
is a celebration of Mexican cul-
ture, of food, drinks, music and
customs unique to Mexico and
has become a bigger holiday
north of the border than it is
to the south, and it has been
adopted into the U.S. calendar
of more and more people every"-
year.
So you now know why on Wed
May 5th, we all have a huge
reason to celebrate, so much so
that Saul Rubio is starting the
party at his flagship La Carreta
in Hammond with entertain-
ment starting on Wed. There
are rumors of other Cinco de
Mayo events, but Rubio is cred-
ited with making the holiday a
hit in Tangipahoa Parish.
