McMAHON Times On Wheels Columnist Guys who love pickup trucks were left drooling by the "fire red" Texas Edition of the 2011 Sierra 1500 Two Wheel Drive Crew Cab SLE. This is one big truck, pow- ered by the 4.8 liter Vortec V8 with coil-over-shock front sus- pension, multi-leaf rear spring suspension, and Z85 handling and trailering suspension, and power rack and pinion steer- ing. This big truck comes with six months of GM's OnStar di- rections and connections, with automatic crash response and turn-by-turn navigation. Before delving into the good- ies that come with the Texas Edition package, let me tell you that all is not work with the big truck. It comes with AM/FM/CD stereo and XM satellite radio. Carpeted floor covering with vinyl mats comes standard. Its government safety rat- ings are high, four stars in the frontal crash test and rollover, and the five star top rating in side crashes. Slipping the surly bounds of auto space with the GMC Sierra 1500 By CHRIS O'CONNOR Times On Wheels Columnist Our test drive GMC Sierra (Texas Edition) was as red as the Space Shuttle Endeavour. As the Space Shuttle stood poised to slip the surly bonds of Earth for the last of its mis- sions, I concentrated instead on my own piloting of our test drive GMC Sierra 1500, Texas Edi- tion, 4-door truck that graced my life this week. According to NASA, a space shuttle uses 11,000 gallons of fuel per second during lift-off. The big red Jimmy was very economical in comparison. Still, the horses under the hood have enough lift-off power to thrust the solid vehicle onto the Inter- state, even in the surly traffic of Baton Rouge on 1-12 at Airline Speaking of surly, there were no complaints from the back seat on any of my missions in this Fire Red colored testament to American car engineering. It might not be rocket science, but designing a big, steady sus- pension truck with clearance enough to embolden a driver to brave a trip to see Mississippi flood waters, is impressive. (So was the Mississippi). When that booming ride can also accom- modate older lady riders to eas- ily hop on for the journey, then Houston, we have no problem. The leg room in the back bench is as ample as those in the front. GMC offers passen- gers in the second row the same arm handles, foot step-ups, cup holders and safety features as the first class passengers up front have. There are many oth- er ways to judge and rate the vehicles that we test drive here at The Ponchatoula Times. One very telling system is to notice how many co-work- ers, friends, and even complete strangers ask to have a look at what we are driving this week. The GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Tex- as Edition we drove last week is a leading contender in that category. Who can resist a big Fire Red pickup truck? It's as American as apple pie, a tradi- tion as proud as our soon to be retired NASA Space Shuttles. The newer body styling of the Sierra has similar sheet metal to its Chevy cousin the Silvera- do 1500 but the distinctive dark horizontal bars in the front grille emphasize not only the truck's wide stance but highlight the large and centered GMC logo, red and chrome- it jumps out and makes a statement. Add some chrome clad 20 inches wheels, fog lamps, and the tough looking front bum- per with tow hooks and, wow, this truck can lure in the many onlookers. Ladies may even want to pose with it. On a more practical note, child LATCH anchors are pro- vided. The SLE package in- cludes a leather wrapped _steer- ing wheel and premium cloth seats, but I'd recommend leath- er upholstery that is available on the upgraded SLT package. The cab area is spacious and quiet, and with the visibility and height that a truck affords you, driving this truck allows you to command the road. It became tempting after parking to just go ahead and click that little le- ver beneath the dash. because, of course, everyone wants to see PLEASE SEE PAGE 7 The EPA rates fuel economy at 15 miles-per-gallon on city streets and 21 mpg on the high- way. Base price if $31,835 before adding the options: $860 Pack- age that includes universal home remote, adjustable power pedals, remote vehicle starter system, electric rear window defogger, and rear parking as- sist. The $3,970 Texas Edition Package includes an engine up- grade to the Vortec 5.3 liter V8 with active fuel management, a 6-speed automatic transmis- sion, heavy duty trailering pack- age, locking rear differential, 20-inch chrome clad wheels, locking tailgate, driver's power 6-way seat, auto dual zone air conditioning, steering wheel sound controls, CD player with USB port, Bluetooth for phone, and fog lamps. But then you get a $1,995 discount on that pack- age. To buy the rear vision cam- era cost $450. Of course our test drive Sierra had all the whistles and bells for a bottom line price of $36,115. Hey, we're all big boys. I know I need not go on the rant about this being a great truck for someone who needs a great truck, and is probably not such a good idea for someone who needs a fuel-efficient commuter vehicle. There are plenty of guys in these parts who would find this the perfect vehicle. I am thinking here of our new Plan- ning and Zoning official Doug Daigle vcho works with his son Joey on some really major con- struction jobs. Louisiana Insurance and Financial, Inc.
