THE PONCHATOULA TIMES, JUNE 23, 2011, PAGE 5 Happy 25 th Nissan Pathfinder By CHRIS O'CONNOR Times On Wheels Columnist The Nissan Pathfinder turns 25 this year. The Times On Wheels test drive team had the Pathfinder this past weekend We discovered why this model has been so popular for so long. It is a far cry from the original Spartan, scrappy Path- finder in 1986. This four door, seven passenger SUV has morphed into a sleek, still-rugged machine. The SE version we drove had all the luxury in the cabin that riders could possibly expect The leather bucket seating up front is fully adjustable, comfortable and the height of the vehicle gives a commanding view to the front row audience. The controls are easy to use and understand. The gauges look modern and classic at the same time. The leather covered steering wheel is fully adjustable and so are the pedals, so any size driver will feel in command The 10-speaker Bose stereo sounded great and XM satellite radio is quite addicting. The real reason for a vehicle like the Pathfinder is its size and convertibility and here is where the 2011 SE edition stands out. Boasting over 16 cubic feet of storage with all the seats up, it converts to almost 80 cubic feet total with the fold flat rear seat- ing, and the easy opened rear door makes loading it up a breeze. Under the hood the 4.0L V6 spins out 266 horsepower and, linked to the 5 speed automatic transmission, the big Pathfinder moves quickly and nimbly whether launching onto the interstate, Bill, passing hybrids or zipping around town. The power is there for other reasons though, and that, of course, is towing capacity, up to 6000 pounds. Almost 10 inches of ground clearance is available for off-road, but you hardly notice the height, getting in and out with the stylish running boards and convenient- ly placed grab handles. Driving, there is a tight suspension, almost sporty, and with the speed proportional steering assist. Cor- nering is confident at speed. Parking is a breeze too. The Nissan Pathfinder has been with us for 25 years now, and I expect to keep seeing it in the future. The 2011 Silver Edition showcases all that we all love about a reasonably priced, truck- based, real SUV, for family, for fun, and for the future.
