Finally...
Football!
By Times Columnist
John Dudek
After months of contract
talks, bounty scandal news, and
dwelling on last year's playoff
loss, it is finally time for some
football. It seemed like an eter-
nity and a half has gone by since
we last saw the boys in black
and gold on the field. What's
worse than that, is the last time
that they were on the field, they
walked off in disbelief, after
losing to the 49ers in the afore-
mentioned playoff loss. Now, all
that is about to get put in the
rear view mirror. Now, there is
no turning back. Drew Brees
has finally signed his contract.
The suspensions in the "Bounty
Gate" scandal have been doled
out. And, maybe best of all, the
NFL schedule makers were
kind enough to give the Saints
a chance to exact some revenge
on the 49ers. New Orleans will
host San Francisco on November
25 in the Mercedes Benz Super-
dome. While many teams would
fold in the wake of the adver-
sity that the Saints will have to
deal with this season, you won't
hear any excuses from this
bunch. In fact, they have been
known to pull together when di-
saster strikes. Remember how
strongly theybounced back
after Hurricane Katrina? Ka-
trina took some of their homes,

and damaged the stadium they
called home. Sure, Coach Pay-
ton has been suspended for the
season. But, if one quarterback
was an extension of his coach,
it is Drew Brees. That is what
makes Drew Brees even more
valuable to this team, and city.
This is finally going to be the
season that Brees gets the na-
tional recognition that he truly
deserves. While Brees leads the
Saints to another playoff ap-
pearance, you will start to hear
the MVP talk on ESPN and oth-
er national sports outlets. Well,
guess what? It is election time,
so I'm starting the Drew Brees
for M.V.P campaign right now.
It doesn't matter what party
you support, because this is go-
ing to end up turning into one
big Super Bowl party. In about
6 months from now, you can
tell everybody that you heard it
here first, in the good ole' Pon-
chatoula Times.
