fortunately, anyone who was at the last city council meeting can
attest that the statement was 80 feet of existing trees. Now it is
down to 35. What the heck?
Q: What about diesel pollution and other pollution associated
with daily operations?
A: '%Ve welcome you to visit our sustainability website. We are
working hard on technologies to reduce air pollutants."
Over and over again I have had people secretly say that they
would not want this building this close to their properties either. I
need those same people to say it out loud. Traffic, noise pollution,
drainage, and run-off pollutants affect all of Ponchatoula and the
sooner they let their representatives know, the better. It is time to
get rid of the "thank goodness it is not in my back yard" mental-
ity and have our representatives take a stand on having this done
right. I am not saying don't do it, just do it right.

responded, "The forum will al-
low my constituents and all
those interested to see the latest
design and for my constituents
to voice their concerns directly
to Walmart representatives."
City Councilwoman Jean-
nemarie Pierson, had this to
communicate, "I'm pleased that
the Walmart representatives
were so willing to participate
in a forum. I encountered no
resistance to their participa-
tion. In fact, after we discussed
my request for the public meet-
ing, they suggested the idea of
a reception where all of the in-
formation would be made avail-
able at various stations with
representatives prepared to
discuss the plans and answer
questions. This is an opportu-
nity for all citizens to acquaint
themselves with the plans
whether they are in favor of, in

opposition to, or are undecided
on the Walmart development. I
encourage all of our citizens to
attend, learn about the proj-
ect, and contact all members of
the council with their informed
opinions. The constituents I
have spoken to, from through-
out the city, are very grateful
for the opportunity to express
their opinions and concerns
and, more importantly, to be in-
volved in the process."
Councilwoman Debra Hills
responded to The Times ex-
plaining that she needed to de-
cline to comment on the issue at
this time due to not fully having
a chance to hear from her con-
stituents on the matter as yet.
At press time Councilmen
Vergil Sandifer and Melvin
Toomer had not responded to
the request for comment.

Ponchatoula City millage
rates unchanged
2012 is a property reassessment year, and the assessed value
of property within the City of Ponchatoula is $46.5 million, an in-
crease of approx. $260,000.
Mayor Bob Zabbia says that the City plans to leave the citywide
millage rate at 16.52 mills, which will result in additional revenue
of approx. $4,300 per year. The city will hold a public hearing dur-
ing the City Council meeting on Monday, August 13th at 6:00pm
in the council chambers at city hall to consider adopting adjusted
millage rates and rolling forward to rates not to exceed the prior
year's maximum millage, which in Ponchatoula's case is 16.52.
Of the 16.52 mills the city levies, 6.52 mills is for the general
fund, 6.0 mills is for Police Dept. Salaries, 2.0 mills is for Fire
Dept. salaries, and 2.0 mills are for Police and Fire Equipment.
