Those of us who only wish we had a small fraction of her talent will be tempted to point out that her uncle is an opera singer with the Met (the New York Metropolitan Opera), her mother Donna is a retired opera singer, her father Pat is on the music faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University teaching and heading the guitar depart- ment. But fairness would demand you first credit the hard work she devotes every day to her craft: "I practice a minimum of two and a half to three hours ev- cry day, but if I could I would practice all day long," she told a Times interviewer still en- tranced by remembered rever- berations of her performance at a recent Ponchatoula concert. Aninth grade scholar at Ham- mond High School, having first matriculated through the chal- lenging curriculum at the Lab School associated with SELU, she has her musical sights set on the prestigious Berklee Col- lege of Music in Boston which she calls "my dream." Berklee got its start as Amer- ica's premier contemporary mu- sic college in 1945 when the emphasis was on Jazz, but has expanded over the years to give America its best Pop, Folk, and Blues musicians, which suits Jessica Kerber (do remember that name) just fine, especially the Blues part because that is her current favorite genre. "I love music because it makes me happy, and it makes others happy," she says in an- swer to a reporter's question. Her current favorite musi- cians include John Mayer, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, "and The Beatles, of course." She hasn't yet followed the path blazed by her grandmoth- er back in the 1920's when she made a name for herself on the mandolin, but Jessica Kerber does already play not just gui- tar, but also flute, piano, and ukulele. Asked which instrument is her favorite and the not unex- pected answer is, "voice." And me giving you a sense of this promising warbler's voice with only a word processor at my command is too daunting a task, doomed to fall short, as you would know my inadequa- cies immediately upon hearing her sing. The only advice I can offer those who truly love music is to remember her name, Jessica Kerber, and when you see her name on a concert poster, as surely you will, do buy a ticket and attend. You can thank me later, again and again. Gator happen to Ponchatoula is to let it become boring. That is not in our nature, now is it? We need more street music, mu- sic in our vacant buildings to give potential tenants an idea or two, we need to shake it up a bit and make it happen. If David Gueldner would consent to take on the next presidency of the Chamber, that would be tremendous. We already have firecrackers following up on what Chief Bry did this past year for Ponchatoula Kiwanis in the persons of new President Randy Tomeny and his successor Brian Steib, ready to take the baton from Randy. Ponchatoula, let us make it hap- pen! If we need professional consul- tants, let's just bring in Don and Louise Steadman from Firetower Road. They are retired and full of fun and great ideas. Just ask Patrick and Felicity, 3 and 5, who caught their first fish Saturday, thanks to the Steadmans. Presents Live Entertainment Upcoming Events Oct. 10.
