Mural artist explains
inspiration
By ANGEL SEPULVADO
The first inspiration I had
for the mural came from the
name Ponchatoula itself. It
means "flowing hair" or "hang-
ing hair."
The Choctaw Indians gave it
this name to describe the beau-
ty of the mossy trees that cover
the area, so I drew a series of
trees with hairstyles and tried
to make them look a bit classy
to keep with the old classic
theme of Ponchatoula.
I also wanted to include Ole
Hardhide the Alligator, as sort
of a wallflower taking in all the
gossip and on-goings of the town
as he does in The Ponchatoula
Times.
I have antique buildings and
shrubbery as the background,
as well as a large magnolia flow-
er to portray the quaint, simple
and easy-going atmosphere of
Ponchatoula.
There is also a crop field to
pay homage to the farm indus-
try that had a large part in de-
veloping the city, as well as a
silhouette of a train.
I wanted to keep the color
palette quite bright and cheery
since that is the attitude of
most of the people who live in
the town.
EDITOR'S NOTE: One of three
muralists planning to paint on the
wall next to the CVS Pharmacy,
Angel Sepulvado is a relatively
new artist who got her start in the
spring of 2007 and then began tak-
ing art classes at SLU the follow-
ing Fall. She says she is inspired
by artists MC Escher, Banksy,
Bfree and Michael Krueger. She
is currently showing a piece at
the Art House in New Orleans.
Don Haynes attended art classes/
camps since age 8. He is a Digi-
tal Arts/Sculpture student at SLU
who currently works mostly on
Mixed Media and Sculpture proj-
ects. He say he is inspired by the
likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat,
Banksy, and Shepard Fairey
Cristina Miranda, an art student
throughout middle and high school,
studied under Mrs. Kim Zabbia. She
concentrates on pottery and paint-
ing, finding inspiration from artists
Sue Clark, Zbiok and Xephonia.
