Ponchatoula farm boy
named Kit00g of Krewe of Iris
By TERRY ANN McMAHON
NEW ORLEANS---The King of Iris
was born on a Ponchatoula strawberry
farm and proclaimed liege lord of the
oldest ladies Mardi Gras krewe in New
Orleans in coronation ceremonies held
Saturday in the Grand Ballroom of the
Hilton Hotel•
Dr. Randolph Howes M.D. Ph.D.
was named king as his mother Mrs.
Magdalena Howes, brother and sister-
in-law Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Howes,
and Miss Julie Hogh joined close friends
in celebrating the surprise announce-
ment at the krewe's annual Coronation
Ball.
Dr. Howes, a graduate of both St.
,Joseph School and Ponchatoula High
School (before earning degrees at SLU,
twin doctorates at Tulane, and a resi-
dency at the prestigious ,Johns Hopkins
medical research center), will reign
beside Queen Emily Heine February 6
when the krewe holds its grand ball at
Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans.
King Randolph and Queen Emily will
lead their subjects to a dinner and dance
to follow in the Grand Ballroom of the
NO. Hilton Hotel.
Saturday's gala affair was another
event in a tradition that dates back to
1917 when the ladies' krewe was born.
Today it is New Orleans' oldest.
The scene at the Hilton Saturday
night was one out of Camelot. Pageantry
was the order of the evening as guests in
formal dress applauded the Court of
1986 as they made a final promenade
before the surprise announcement of
the identities of the 1987 king and
queen.

Crossroads
Club meets Nov. 13
By HELEN RAIFORD
The Home Demonstration Club met
Nov. 13 at the home of Mrs. Annette
Hagg with 16 members present.
Acting president Hilda Fletcher led
our meeting in a very interesting dis-
cussion.
We, as a club, visited three ladies with
a love gift of food boxes.
Our club discussed our plans for a
Christmas supper in December.
Helen Raiford and Ruth Barron had a
fun-filled White Elephant sale with a
nice profit.
Hostess Annette presented Manis
LeBlanc with a nice door prize and
served delicious refreshments to the
oup
advances to first one lovely lady and
then another, the sceptor of reign was
finally handed to this year's Qtreen
Emily Heine.
Then the process began again as the
identity of the king was about to be
revealed. The krewe's captain teased
first one tuxedoed gentleman and then
another with the sceptor, making her
way around the mammoth ballroom as
she did so, finally stopping at the table
of Dr. Howes. Here she left the sceptor, r
and the Krewe of Iris had its Mardi Gras
King of 1987.
Then followed a royal promenade of
the entire court, followed by a dance
reserved to the royals, this followed by a
night of dancing to the tunes of a large
dance band, followed by a midnight
champagne breakfast.
The reign of King Randolph of Pan-
chatoula has begun!
