Castell's 44 points fall short of record By GORDON FENNY Coach Peggy Allred's decision to bench center Robin Castell with less than four minutes remaining in last week's 62-21 romp over St. Charles cost the Ponchatoula star a chance to break the girl's single-game points record. Castell, who hit for 44 points on the night, the same number she wears on her jersey, fell one shy of the record set by Elizabeth Watts while playing in the colors of the Lady Wave in the late 50's. "Had I known that Robin needed just two points to break the record, I'd have left her in the game a little longer," stated Allred as she reflected on her decision. "It was disappointing for her not to set the record, and it was my mistake. However, I'm certain she'll get another opportunity to eclipse it before the season is over." If the attractive 6-2 senior was dis- appointed in not setting the record, her face and emotions certainly didn't show it when interviewed the following day. "It would have been nice to break the old mark, but I can live with it," said Castell philosophically. "I missed six field goals and one free throw. Had any of those shots gone in, I'd have either set or tied it. I'U get another chance." Castell, who hit 19 of 25 from the floor, and six of seven from the foul line, single-handedly destroyed the Comets in the first half as she poured in 26 points. She also finished the game with eight rebgunds. The performance of Castell over- shadowed a standout showing by Dixie Guagliardo who collected 11 assists and was instrumental in directing the Lady Wave offense. She contributed only two points in the scoring onslaught, but won high praise from Alfred for her overall performance. "Dixie played a great game for us, and was instrumental in steeing up Robin for many of her points," said the Lady Wave mentor. "Overall, 1 was happy with the entire team's showing. But there is still more work to be done if we want to compete with the top teams on our schedule." One of the major factors for the Lady Wave's wide margin of victory was the lack of turnovers. In Ponchatoula's first outing against Southern Lab in the Doyle Jamboree, turnovers prevented the Lady Wave from adding substantially to its 40-15 whipping of the Baton Rouge school. Stephanie Fletcher and Paige Allen each contributed six points in the victory, while Carol Eubanks tossed in four. For St. Charles, Michelle Vernon hit for eight points while Ann Holt added seven. Allison Brady, Ann Habisreitinger, and Michelle Martin contributed two each in the loss. Linda Nash, assistant coach with the Rice Lady Owls, was on hand to witness the performance of Castell who, the Friday, had signed her letter of intent to play with the Houston school. In the JV contest, Ponchatoula was never threatened as it rolled to a 20-8 first-half lead, and romped to an easy 36-16 win over St. Charles. Shellie Gill and Stacy Allen each scored 16 points for the winners, while Melissa Faust and Debra Pugh chipped in with two points each. Rachel Monica and Kim Bourges were high scorers for the Comets with four points each. These were but two of the points rolled up by the Lady Waves as they smothered the St. Charles Comets 62- 21 in their season opener at home. Star center Robin Castell scored 44 points in the game. one short of the record held by Elizabeth Watts.
