Olde Town Shoppe
offers store full of "different" gifts
Staff Report
Olde Town Shoppe, 138 West Pine,
is one of the most unique stores in all of
Tangipahoa Parish.
Shoppers looking for something
"different" to give as a gift know they
have come to the right place when they
open the local Hallmark shop's door.
Over 25 scents from an exotic collection
of Root candles treat the nose, as eyes
try to take in all the many offerings.
Huge stuffed animals, hand-crafted
permanent German candles with
hunting scenes, storybook candles,
alabaster containers, Limoges porcelain
figures, a small bear that is the mascot of
the local pre-school, a Perrin Panda,
hand painted fans from Spain, all vie for
the eye with the Artesania Rinconado
animal figures from Uruguay, the latest
in kids' collectibles, from stickers to
beads.
It is easy to tell that the emporium
owned and operated by the Zachmann
family has to be experienced to be
appreciated.
Brides-to-be have their own corner
and are encouraged to take the bridal
books home with them so they can plan
their wedding day in the comfort of their
own home. Back at the shop, every-
thing she will need, from invitations to
the garters and goblets are available at
Olde Town Shoppe.
An entire room is reserved for the
most extensive paperbook book collection
in Ponchatoula, with titles representing
every reader interest, from cook books
to mystery, romance, science fiction
and children's books.
Take a quick look around the entire
store (a sensation akin to standing in a
giant kaliedascope) and you quickly get
the notion that these are special people
operating this store.

children Ginger, Mike and Judy have
been adding their ideas, time, labor and
energies to Olde Town Shoppe since
they bought the store three years ago.
"I like Ponchatoula. I love the people,
that's why I bought the store," says the
father of the family, quickly echoed by
daughter Ginger:
"The people are great. And I say that
realizing there is a big difference in
people from one place to the next.
Ponchatoula is special."
"l see a lot of potential for this area.
We need some get-up-and-go and I
believe that spirit's taking hold. I know
that I have been welcomed with open
arms, and I appreciate that/'
Why is she so positive that downtown
Ponchatoula is getting ready to prosper?
"This is an enjoyable place to shop. I
know you can find everything you're
looking for on main street," said Miss
Zachmann, who on Friday was elected
to the board of directors of the Poncha-
toula Chamber of Commerce by fellow
merchants and professionals.
Olde Town Shoppe still specializes in
the Hallmark line of quality items, and
can order any Hallmark item for fast
delivery that is not already on the
shelves. And the shop's greeting card
selection is predictably the most
complete in the area. But it is obvious to
any visitor that the Zachmanns have
taken their store far beyond what is
normally found in a Hallmark shop.
If Ponchatoula is celebrating St.
Patrick's Day then it is the Olde Town
Shoppe which will be stocked with all
the items needed, from leprechaun
lapel pins to vests and green hats, green
table cloths and shamrock napkins.
And no matter if the event is an
Oktoberfest, a Strawberry Ball, or any
of the traditional holidays, Olde Town
Shoppe is sure to have thought far
enough in advance to order all of the
necessary trappings to make the
occasion special.
School children are frequent visitors
and always find a welcome waiting.
"I like young people. We have items
here for young people as a result. We
now carry those things that young
people can afford for themselves and
for their parents," explains Zach Zach-
mann.
He told the Times that if there was
one thing he hoped he could express to
the people of Ponchatoula it would be
to thank them for remaining faithful
customers during the reconstruction of
main street, even when shopping there
required extra effort.

Scallan Financial Center
Scallan Financial Center
to open Saturdays for Christmas
Staff Report
Joe Braddy and his staff at Scallan
Financial Center, I01 West Pine, are
prepared to help make Christmas
wishes come true for shoppers and
downtown merchants alike.
"We have fast service, friendly atmos-
phere, and if we don't already know
you, we would like to meet you,'" was
Braddy's main message when inter-
viewed for this publication.
He took the opportunity to announce
that starting Saturday. November 30
and continuing through Christmas. his
offices would be open on Saturdays
from 8:30 to noon to assist downtown
shoppers.
"A Christmas shopper can come
downtown, see what they would like to
buy from the manv stores here, and
corue [o us with the total they will need to
make their purchases. Within the hour,
after they have enjoyed lunch or used
the time to browse in the stores some
more. we will have their Christmas
money for them," explained Braddy.
Of course, Christmas shopping loans
are just one of the many financial
services offered at the company's
center-of-city location.
Loans are available for autos, homes,
miscellaneous purchases, or just for
cash. "We can handle most loan
requests in one hour's time, and people
should know that they can even phone
in their loan application," added Ms.
Sara Hano, who also works at Scallan
Financial Center.
Adds Braddy: "'We already finance
for Petrolane and we are willing to work
with all Ponchatoula businesses to
finance their customer's purchases.
"I invite everyone who just wants to
discuss their financing to come in for a
talk. Since March of 1977 1 have been
in the banking and financing business
and my experience tells me that while
financial problems are troubling, there is
almost always a solution that will relieve
the pressure and clear up the individual's
financial picture." added Braddy.
He is yet another businessman in
"The Ponchatoula Mall" who is bullish
on the commercial district's future:
"I see great days, months and years
ahead for Ponchatoula's downtown
shopping district. I would like to see
Scallan Financial Services grow over the
next five to ten years so that customers
shopping downtown will always have
the financial help they need to shop-at-
home here in Ponchatoula. This will
make for a more excitiqg business
community in the future."
