From the Mayor's Office:
Walmart real estate deal closes
Times Report
It was confirmed by Walmart attorneys last Wednesday that the
real estate transaction and the "formal closing" were completed on
the Ponchatoula development. All final and signed documents as it
relates to the city are expected to be delivered this week.
"It is anticipated construc-
tion will begin in the first quar-
ter of 2013. We do understand
that there is at least one other
parcel of property in close prox-
imity of the Walmart site that
is under contract and will be
sold as soon as construction be-
gins. City Hall is also getting
other inquiries from retailers
concerning potential locations
within the city," Mayor Zabbia
told The Ponchatoula Times.

will notice a 60-cent increase in
garbage and recycling bills go-
ing out the first of January.
"This increased fee in nec-
essary to comply with the
city's contract with Progres-
sive Waste. The contract allows
for an annual increase in ac-
cordance with the CPI and for
increased tipping fees at the
Parish Landfill. We were able
to avoid the increase last year
but must pass this year's along
to users. Fees are still under
those charged when the city
was under with Waste Manage-
ment three years ago, and prior
to curbside recycling," said the
mayor.
Plans and specifications for
the city's new water tower were
hand-carried last Thursday
to the state's Office of Facility
Planning and Control in New
Orleans for their review and
• comments.
"During our discussions, I
was assured the review would
be completed this week, allow-
'ing us to begin advertising for
bids later this month with pro-
posals due at the end of Janu-
ary. It is our plan to have this
project under construction in
concert with the Walmart proj-
ect and to have concurring com-
pletion dates."
City Hall will be closed De-
cember 24 and 25 for Christ-
mas, opening again for business
on the December 26. It will be
again closed December 31 and
January i for New Year's, open-
ing again for business on Janu-
ary 2
"Congratulations to the
Chamber for a successful Christ-
mas Parade. The new 'route
seemed to be well-received. This
year's parade Chairman, Ernie
Drake III, is already making
notes for next year. Our street
crew is to be commended for its
speedy and efficient cleanup
after the parade," said Mayor
Zabbia, adding:
"Also, congratulations to the
new slate of Chamber officers
and directors and thanks to Dr.
Karen Carter for her years of
