qualify, because these are the rules under which the local elves op-
erate in order to qualify for a booth in the converted railroad depot
Santa uses for his Southern showcase.
All gifts must be crafted by hand by those who hold the booth.
If you dare to be truly bold and fear not the sudden rap of the
knuckle, or the baleful gaze of a withering eye, then ask any of
these ageless creators how long they have been crafting. You would
have an easier time coming up with a recipe for the atomic bomb.
Take a closer look at the craftsmen and women who hold those
individual booth spaces. Pay close attention to their eyes, and to
their mouths. They hold secrets.
For the artistry that goes into making a unique Christmas gift,
a keepsake guaranteed to stay in a family and be passed on from
one generation to the next, to be treasured all along its way, is not
the product of common knowledge.
Call their gifts magical if you wish. Who would argue? But while
giving priority to shopping locally, insuring your Christmas gift
money does the most good for your city and your fellow citizens,
why not take advantage of shopping where you live, where the
book you buy is sold to you by the author who wrote it, where lost
traditions of wood and glass live on in the creations of craftsmen
the equal of which you just can't find this side of the North Pole,
unless you happen to treat yourself to the magic of tile Ponchatou-
la Country Market, especially at Christmas time.
Just mind the elves, er, the booth holders, because they are as
busy as Rudolph this time of year.
