Englishwoman missing her father
Dear Sir or Madam
I live in England and for the past 30 years have been trying
to trace my father and siblings. This morning I was overjoyed to
receive from the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, the
details I require to begin my search. They recommended that I
contact a local newspaper to see if there was any record of my fa-
ther's obituary.
My father's name was Prentice Evans. He was born on 19 March
1912 and died on 15 September 1993. His last known place of resi-
dence was Ponchatoula, Tangipahoa, Louisiana 70454.
I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully
Maureen Craig
Dear Maureen, I will print your letter and see if any of our read-
e.rs knew your father, plus I will search the newspaper archives for
l is obituary.

Omega Mardi Gras Parade deadline nears
Plans for the 27th annual Krewe of Omega Mardi Gras parade
set to roll on February 1 at 6:30 p.m. are nearing the completion
stage. The Krewe of Omega is requesting that parade entries reg-
'ister as soon as possible. The deadline for entries is Wednesday
::January 30.
The theme for this year's parade is "The Best of Everything."
:The floats will depict aspects of a community such as Downtown,
:Movie Theater, The Park, Dining, The Office, Fire Station, etc.
In keeping with the community spirit of the parade, mayors
from Tangipahoa Parish will serve as Grand Marshals for the
event. They will be presented with their Grand Marshal ribbons
during the annual TREK that takes place on the morning of the
parade. This year's parade will feature eight marching bands.
New to the parade this year will be a Battle of the Bands. The
bands are being asked to give their best performances. Judges will
:be placed at strategic points along the route to view the bands.

tence for Ole Hardhide was thwarted by a reprieve of sorts cour-
itesy of the current Ponchatoula mayor and his staff.
: There is now real hope the heir apparent of the Hardhide dy-
.nasty will soon be repatriated with Ponchatoula, and with the
:d wntown cage that was so skillfully constructed for him and his
:t'amily (see related story).
In the interest of full disclosure, the reader is reminded that
loose talk at the time of the Detroit Ole Hardhide's discovery sug-
sted he might be swapped in exchange for Times Publisher Bry-
an T. McMahon, known to wear a kilt, but of course Police Chief
13ry Layrisson was called in for protection on the grounds that
McMahon has lived here far too long to ever return to the frozen
igorth, especially in Winter.

City law
FROM PAGE ONE
Citizens and organizations seeking permits would have to go
before the city council to win that body's approval.
Another part of the proposed new city law (see Page 5 where the
laws are printed) would allow citizens to use the insurance agent
or agency of their choice, not one stipulated by the city.
The mayor's assistant, Ms. Rhonda Sheridan clarified that ex-
isting city law already allows citizens to use any insurance agent
or agency they want, so long as the policy is for a minimum of $1
million, and names the City of Ponchatoula as being insured.
Under Toomer's proposed ordinance, which will be on the Febru-
ary council agenda, those seeking to sell alcohol in the city on city
property would have to come before the council to win its approval
and then apply to the state for a temporary alcohol sales permit.
The councilman told The Times that his own experiences with
alcohol use prompted him to suggest the change in laws.
Once approved by the city and the state, the state permit notice
would have to be posted at the proposed alcohol sales site, as re-
quired under state law, according to Councilman Toomer.
Current city law makes it easier fo,say, the Strawberry . es i-
val or other such event to sell alcohol. Now, there is no city require-
ment for council approval or for posting the notice.
Toomer wanted to clarify another story in The Ponchatoula
Times, written by the Gardenettes, that indicated the group re-
ceived a donation from Councilman Toomer of $1,500 for the But-
terfly Garden, a major Gardenettes project.
Councilman Toomer wanted to clarify that the money in ques-
tion was a city budget item under the parks' budget, not from him
personally. The $1,500 was set aside by the city for the Butterfly
Garden in Toomer's district.

Shepherd owned by a would-be carpet customer. The dog fight end-
ed badly for the dog, who took 11 shots from Berwick's pistol and
a Smith & Wesson .38 borrowed from the dog's female owner, and
then was decapitated by a veterinarian checking for rabies.
The Irish-American Rotarian then displayed his fang-torn
bloodied garments from that fateful day, claiming the experience
has haunted him in a very real way.
"Since then there has been a canine conspiracy to ruin me,"
claimed the height-challenged raconteur, "Dogs didn't treat me the
way they did before. Mailmen have told me of similar experiences,
being snarled at by dogs long after giving up the uniform and the
mailbag."
Berwick then introduced the cute little mutt he took in on a
rain-lashed Christmas night. "This little dog," he intoned, "is a
plant. I took him in and put him under my bed, only to find that he
snores worse than any human."
At Thursday's Rotary meeting, Berwick made an unsuccessful
try at auctioning off the pooch, which he named Quasimoto after
the Hunchback of Notre Dame, a character of novelist Victor Hugo
portrayed by Lon Chaney in the 1923 classic movie.
Berwick calls his mutt "Mo" for short, and keeps the cute little
fellow under a wary gaze.
Dear Editor:
Someone left a white dog in my yard a few days ago on Ester-
brook Acres. I was wondering if anyone contacted you about a lost
white male dog. It looks like it might be part American Eskimo. It
did not have a collar but is friendly. My cell phone number is (985)
507-2077.
