Imagine a Ponchatoula without the
head utility lines.
blight of over-
If that is hard to visualize,
take a walk through Memorial
Park where all the electrical
lines have recently been bur-
ied and hooked up to five new
electrical utility boxes spotted
around the park, many of them
donated by the Strawberry Fes-
tival Board.
Under a new scheme of oper-
ations, the City of Ponchatoula
will pay for the base electric bill
for the popular park, and when
festivals and special events
need electricity, the boards in-
volved will pay the utility costs
for the Strawberry Festival, the
Chamber's Party in the Pits,
Night Out Against Crime, and
other events.
That was the explanation
furnished by Mayor Bob Zabbia
in answer to inquiries posed by
The Ponchatoula Times, whose
reporters could not help but
notice the electrical utility con-
struction underway at Memo-
rial Park.
Zabbia said that Entergy
is not expected to expand the
project citywide - removing the
aerial electricity lines in favor
of buried utility lines that do
not blight citizens' and visitors'
view of the city.
Not even Entergy's fumble-
fingered blackout of parts of the
Superdome during Sunday's Su-
per Bowl has resulted in enough
contrition to cease draping ugly
utility wires throughout this
and other cities Only those
communities which have stood
up to the Entergy and forbid-
den the draping of its electrical
lines on unsightly poles have
saved their skylines.
And not even the repeated
damage and loss of power re-
sulting from hurricane-caused
electrical outages has moved
Entergy to have a change of its
corporate heart
Now at least, Ponchatouia;s
Memorial Park will stand as an
oasis of reason and beauty.

In all my ooing and ahhing last week over the many fine
columnists here at The Ponchatoula Times, I managed to leave I
out the pride of the litter, Marion Fannaly, whose knowledge ofl
antique automobiles is unequaled in the universe This Florida
Parishes Vintage Car Club leader and his wonderful wife Vicky
are antique car personalities known far and wide. John Evans
would have to cancel his popular Community Motors Easter
Car Show were it not for this Ponchatoula couple Marion's
regular quizzes ("How Well Do You Know Your Cars?") are a
favorite of readers and unique to this newspaper's automotive
section, Times On Wheels
Before John Johnson, instrumentalist and singer, started
up his weekly All Around The Town entertainment column in
The Ponchatoula Times, I just thought we had a lot to do in
these parts. Between John Johnson and Chris Roussel, Our
Ponchatoula will keep dancing and prancing through Mardi
Gras and beyond. Read about it!
Please do not fail to turn out for Saturday's charity golf
tournament at Hammond Golf Center, located on Club Deluxe
Road, pretty much the border between Ponchatoula and our
northern suburb (details on Page One). Proceeds will pay for
the Avenue of Flags in Ponchatoula Cemetery honoring mili-
tary veterans and those who didn't make it home.
The American Legion's Randy Baldini partnered with John
Johnson, now with The Ponchatoula Times, to give us a beauti-
i ful golf outing for a great cause. Just show up, and don't forget
your clubs! Details are in this edition.
Then why not slip on a mask, slide out of town, and celebrate
Mardi Gras before you have to put on the sackcloth and ashes?
I recommend the super Cajun version as enjoyed in Eunice.
Don't just watch it on TV either You deserve better.
Times garden columnist Dudley Clark has been doing a tad
too much research on his food column, or so says his doctor
That would explain Dudley's mad bicycling for miles every day
and his dramatic loss of weight. I hesitate to say that colum-
nist Dudley is the Lance Armstrong of Our Ponchatoula, be-
cause that might be misunderstood.
