Greenie fall to Catholic
Ponchatoula's Greenies ventured to Baton Rouge Feb 22 to participate in
Catholic High's opening tourney where Ponchatoula lost a two point lead.

due to light rain and heavily overcast skies after five innings of play.
Leading off for Ponchatoula was Steve Hebert who opened the first inning
with a double into right field. Asa Faulkner followed but was called out at first
on a sacrifice bunt.
Pat Miller's centerfield single enabled Hebert to romp in the run as Miller
went to first• Miller stole second but was unsuccessful, as Jeremy Robinson
struck out on a 3-2 count.
Catholic High ran one run on two hits and a walk to tie it at one at the
bottom of the first inning.
Ponchatoula played a hot offensive second inning which proved to be their
last.
It was Tinny Beyl and Mike Cooper who lighted the baseline in that
second frame. Beyl rapped out a single and scooted to second on Mike
Hutches' sacrifice bunt. took third on Mike Cooper's error run and rolled
home on Steve Hebert's double Cooper walked on a Catholic High error on
a 3-I count and veered in behind Beyl to score Ponchatoula's last run on
Hebert's double. At that point and time. Ponchatoula had a two point lead
But Catholic's pitcher+ Corey Gomez. held Ponchatoula for to hits and
walked only one Greenie player in the top of the fifth tuning to keep the
Greenies at a three run standstill.

result, Ponchatoula suffered a 103 loss to Catholic High who last year
knocked Ponchatoula out of the phyoffs as Catholic lost only one player last

and Tinny Beyl followed with one single, one run and a stolen base who als(

Greenie victory
triggers successful season

Attention baseball fans!
Ponchatoula's Green Wave ballclub
opened the season Feb 21 with a 10-8
victory over Riverdale.
Ponchatoula hosted the twi-night
match and trailed behind by six runs in
the bottom of the second inning but
came alive by the bottom of the third as
Ponchatoula whirled in six runs. It was
tied at seven at the top of the fourth
when Ponchatoula picked up on four
hits and four walks that gave them the
lead in the third inning. ,,
Riverdale. in the last four innings.
pulled in only one run off of five hits and
four walks as Ponchatoula held a two
point lead after Ponchatoula pitcher
Clem McKay struck out Riverdale's final
batter of the match.
It took the Oreenies two good innings
before the team warmed up. Jeremy
Robinson. the junior pitcher and infield
player, scored Ponchatoula's first run
when he soared one over the fences as
Ponchatoula's only home run.
It was now Ponchatoula's inning
Riverdale went to bat three times and
wrapped up three outs At the top of the
third baseman Tinny Disher put the
first batter out when a wild grounder
lined up with Clem McKay who relayed •
the ball to first in time for the out Asa
Faulkner then picked up one in the
infield and fired it to Disher who agam
put the batter out at first. Pat Miller put
Ponchatoula up to bat as he caught a fly
in right field for Riverdale's third
consecutive out
Following two foul balls. Mike
Hutches drove one past center field to
safely 'ake-first base Steve Hebert
struck out but Hutches stole second
during the confustion Hutches then
scooted to third as Asa Faulkner rolled a
single to left field where he took first.
Hutches hammered in the run when Pat
Miller took firs1 on a center field
grounder.
Riverdale made their biggest mistake
when their relief pitcher rotated in to
pitch. Their pitcher triggered four runs
[or Ponchatoula as they walked four
batters to first.
Scott Kupper began the scoring spree
where he walked, in a bases-loaded
situation. Jeremy Robinson and Tinny
Beyl both walked in two bases giving
Ponchatoula a new edge to work with.

Steve Hebert ended the inning as he
struck out when the bases were loaded
at the bottom of the third.
Riverdale batted twice but pulled in
only one run in the fourth inning as they
were put out on three flys in the
outfield. The score was tied at seven. In
the bottom of the fourth. Asa Faulkner
brought one home as Scott Kupper
veered in a double which was followed
by Tinny Beyl's single. Kupper and
B'eyl brought in both Pat Miller and
Scott Kupper which left Ponchaotula
with a 10-8 advantage at the bottom of
the fourth inning
Ponchatoula maintained a busy but
flexible fifth inning Riverdale went up
to bat three times for three outs as
Ponchatoula hit twice, stole two bases.

Tinny Disher all hit short pop-ups

Riverdale had their last chance to
climb out of the hole as Ponchatoula
had a two point lead at the top of the
seventh
Timmy Disher put out Riverdale's first
batter on a right field pop-up for their
first out Clem McKay scooped up a
short grounder and bombed to first
baseman Dtsher as Riverdale
successively pulled in their second out
At last. Clem McKay ended the game
as he struck out Riverdale's final batter
which won th game for Ponchatoula lO-
deremy Robinson added his second
inning home run to his total as Pat Miller
and Scott Kupper finished as the team's
superior scorers with two runs each.
Pat Miller also led in hits with three
singles as Mike Hutches followed with
two singles. Clem McKay struck out five
batters and walked four in his last two
innings when he relieved Jeremy
Robinson who struck out six batters and
walked one in fi,ve innings of play
The Greenies will participate in
Hammond's Tourney Feb 28-March2
in Hammond and on March 5 the
Greenies will play host to Covington
with the JV game slated for 4 p.m.
