Man awarded $80,000 for gunsh at A 12-person)ury awarded Lyle Ellzey of Amite, $80,000.00 for a gunshot • wound inflicted by Dennis Des Roches on September 27, 1983. Ellzey was installing carpet in a house being built for Steve Saint, in the Arcola community, when he walked into a wooded area, and one pellet from a buckshot charge hit him in the clavicle, lodging in his lower chest. Des Roches was practicing target shooting, .qetting ready for the d'eer season• -The jury, atter deliberating for one and a half hours, found that arms are a dangerous instrumentality and, thus, extraodinary care must be exercised in their use. As a result of the shootin[h Ellzey suffer,:d 10 percent disability to his right arm bvcause of numbness in his thumb and index finger. Des Roches had a $I00.000.00 homeo-wner"s liability policy with (Qmmercial Union. Ellzey told the jury that he ma not want a judgement beyond the policy limits because he did not want to hurt Des Roches person- ally. Joe Simpson, attorney for Ellzey. stated that, because of the decision, he hoped that all persons owning firearms in their home would be extremely careful so that children and others would not be hurt accidentally" 7th Ward offers modern diet plan Seventh Ward General hired a co- ordinator for the new Optifast weight loss program after an introductory meeting January 28 drew 300 people to the hospital. Ann McDaniel, registered dietitian and head of the hospital's Dietary Department, said she was delighted to have Beverly Whitehead, R.D., and past president of the Hammond District Dietetic Association, overseeing the new Optifast program. "Optifast needs its own coordinator because the program involves physicians, nurses, social workers, and a psychologist in addition to the registered dietitians. The people on this weight loss program need close supervision; most have complicating risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart and circulatory problems," Mrs. McDaniel explained. Mrs. Whitehead, who comes to Seventh Ward General from the Florida Parishes Artificial Kidney Center where she was renal dietitian, is enthusiastic about the results of the pilot program which began in December• "People have been able to discontinue high blood pressure medicine; diabetics have been able to discontinue insulin injections. It's helping people who thought they'd never lose weight and it's improving their quality of life as well," Mrs. Whitehead said• Mrs. McDaniei and Dr. John Walker investigated the Optifast program developed at the Mr. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. They were looking for acomplete and safe weight loss program for people who had at least 50 pounds to lose and whose problem was complicated by other health risks. Two physicians at the Mr. Sinai Medical Center, a Dr. Vincent Vertes-- an authority on high blood pressure and kidney disease--and Dr. Saul Genuth. a diabetes specialist, had developed a weight loss program with a remarkable long-term success record• "Two-year follow-up studies show that about 80 percent of the Optifast participants stay within 10 pounds of their proper weight. Less than 10 percent of the people who lose weight on conventional diets maintain that weight loss," Mrs. McDaniel said. The success of the Optifast program has been well documented in medical journals and in practice at major medical centers throughout the United States and Canada over the past 12 years. It is only offered through reputable physicians and medical centers. "'One of the most important aspects of Optifast is its maintenance program. The people in this program know that we aren't just concerned with weight loss; the ultimate goal is keeping it off," Mrs. Whitehead explained. Mrs. Whitehead has received special training from Sandoz Nutrition, the formula. She is now busy setting up new classes and schedules for people on the Optifast waiting list. "We're going to accommodate everyone, but we need to expand gradually to insure that the quality of the program is maintained," Mrs. Whitehead explained. 4-H officers named By GREG SOUTHWORTH 4-H Officers were installed at the Livingston Parish Executive Meeting on February 21 at the Police Jury Room.
