Mayor against festival vendors
By EDDIE PONDS
Times Reporter
Mayor Charles Gideon appeared
before the StTawberry Festival Board for
the first time as mayor of Ponchatoula,
with Councilman-at-Large Julian
DufTeche standing by his side at the
March 6 meeting.
lfi, dies and gentlemen, this is my
time appearing before this board as
your mayor. I'm here to express my
COncern about the outside vendors
coming into the city making thousands
of dollars durina the festival and
leaving," said the-mayor, adding, "rm
totally against these vendors coming
into town. Of course last year, I
Understand some vendors paid $500 for
a permit, and some just came into the
city and opened shop."
He said the festival was designed for
non-profit organizations in
Ponchatoula. Hammond, and the
surrounding areas to make money once
a year for charitable purposes.
The mayor also said he is not against
the local merchants selling their
products from the sidewalk.
"At past festivals 1 understand they
didn't have enough policemen to
monitor the outside vendors," said the
mayor, adding, "I disagree. Mayor pro-
tern Julian Dufreche and myself, with
one policeman, will monitor the street
vendors. We'll walk up to them and ask,
'do you have a city permit?' If they say
no, they will have 30 minutes to get the
hell out of town."
Mayor Gideon said his main concern
is getting the people to the festival
grounds. Thousands of people come to
the festival and never make it to the
grounds. Some people think the festival
is in town with so many street vendors.
They will not have a free entry to the
city.
Councilman-at-Large Dufreche
informed the festival board that a Mr.
Silverman, president of Jefferson
Disposal, agreed to pick up the trash
from the festival free as a public service
for the festival and the city.
Dufreche also agreed to work with
the mayor in monitoring the street
vendors.
