The Hammond Chamber of Com-
merce will sponsor the Miss Balloon

Susan Alfonso. director.
Winner of the Balloon Festival
Pageant will enter the Louisiana State
Pageant held to select the state queen.
who will compete for the crown of Miss
America in the National competition at
Atlantic City. N.J., in September.
The event this year will be the first
annual Miss Balloon Festival Pageant

of Commerce. "We are again serving
as sponsors of the pageant this year
because we believe it provides a
valuable contribution to the community
and to the young ladies who will enter
the competition," Susan said in
announcing plans.
We believe it serves the community
well because it focuses attention on the
high calibre of young ladies who are
residents of our area and we believe it
serves youth well because it provides
the opportunity for the young ladies
who compete to gain added poise
through public appearances and to gain
added maturity through participation in
a community program such as the
Balloon Festival Pageant.
Most important, it will provide the
opportunity for the girl who is the
winner to continue to seek scholarship
awards at the Louisiana State Pageant
which will aid her in obtaining an
education at the college of her choice.
In announcing that the Miss Balloon
Festival Pageant will be held again in
April. but that the time and place have
not yet been scheduled.
She also announced that committees
to plan the program are being formed
and that organizations in the area will
be requested to sponsor contestants for
the pageant.
This will be a community endeavor
and we in the Chamber of Commerce
are sure all in the community will
participate to insure its success.
We will be requesting the community
and its organizations to sponsor con-
testants, to attend the pageant the night
it will be conducted and to support it
financially. For further information to
enter or interested in sponsoring a con-
