Elmer & Gwen Schmidt Willing Workers meet By JUNE PITTMAN The March l lth meeting of the Willing Workers Homemakers Club met at the Ponchatoula Community Garden Club Center with 24 members attending. President Rita Murtagh announced that the Homemakers Council Meetinq will be on March 21st at I0 a.m. in ,.mite at the Extension Service Office. She urged all members to attend and participate in the Council's White Elephant Sale and the Easter Bonnet Contest sponsored by the Council. The President also asked for volunteers for 4-H Achievement Day in Amite on March 23rd. Vicki ',mp volunteered to make five dozen cookies and Rita Murtagh will make filling for sandwiches. Those volunteer- mg to help on Achievement Day are: Rita Murtagh, Nell LeBlanc. Vivian Materne and June Pittman. Lucille Charbonnet will act as alternate. An invitation to all senior citizen club members to attend a Pot-Luck Supper at the American Legion Home in Ponchatoula on Saturday. March :&ra, I' P.m. was extended by Lucille Char- Ioanet. Winner of the Balloon Festival Pageant will enter the Louisiana State Pageant held to select the state queen. who will compete for the crown of Miss America in the National competition at Atlantic City. N.J., in September. The event this year will be the first annual Miss Balloon Festival Pageant to be a Miss America Preliminary sponsored by the Hammond Chamber of Commerce. "We are again serving as sponsors of the pageant this year because we believe it provides a valuable contribution to the community and to the young ladies who will enter the competition," Susan said in announcing plans. We believe it serves the community well because it focuses attention on the high calibre of young ladies who are residents of our area and we believe it serves youth well because it provides the opportunity for the young ladies who compete to gain added poise through public appearances and to gain added maturity through participation in a community program such as the Balloon Festival Pageant. Most important, it will provide the opportunity for the girl who is the winner to continue to seek scholarship awards at the Louisiana State Pageant which will aid her in obtaining an education at the college of her choice. In announcing that the Miss Balloon Festival Pageant will be held again in April. but that the time and place have not yet been scheduled. She also announced that committees to plan the program are being formed and that organizations in the area will be requested to sponsor contestants for the pageant. This will be a community endeavor and we in the Chamber of Commerce are sure all in the community will participate to insure its success. We will be requesting the community and its organizations to sponsor con- testants, to attend the pageant the night it will be conducted and to support it financially. For further information to enter or interested in sponsoring a con- testant may call Susan Alfonso at 542-1383 after 5 p.m. or Rhonda Williams at 345-8595. American Legion donates to local causes, vets Leander J. Kinchen American Legion Auxiliary Unit 47 met on Thursday March 7 with 23 members present, It was decided to donate to the following: $50.00 to the Boy Scouts. $50.00 to Foreign Relations country, $50.00 to the ice machine at Carville, La, $25.00 to Crisis Fund, $25.00 to health shelf at La. A certificate of appreciation was received from the Statue of Liberty Association for 47's contribution to help in the restoration. Senior citizens were served after their February meeting. Those making cakes were: Hallie Perrin, Eva Winterstien and Enola Degruy. Those attending and helping serve were Enola Degruy, Alpha Pert'in and Jennie Tare. Those making cakes to serve at the March meeting are Hallie Perrin and Jennie Tate. A joint memorial service for deceased Legion and Auxiliary members of Post 47 and Unit 47 will be held at the April meeting which will be April 4. The Easter party at Hammond State School will be on Wednesday, March 27. All who want to attend meet at Legion home at 12:30 p.m. Miss Poppy and Little Miss Poppy roade in St. Patrick parade. Poppy collection dates will be Friday and Saturday May 3 & 4. Some members of Unit 47 attended a workshop in Gonzales, La. on Feb. 24. Those attending were: Sylvia Anthony. Henrietta Joiner and Jennie Tare. Seniors seek home By LUCILLE CHARBONNET The Ponchatoula advisory board with the Voluntary Council on Aging met Tuesday March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Council on Aging office. There were nine members present. The meeting was opened with the Lord's prayer led by Mrs. Mary Carter. President Steve Pugh turned the meeting over to Dave Perkins and Deborah Hendrix, Acting Director of TVCOA. Ways and means were discussed toward a place where our Ponchatoula senior citizens can meet to eat, do ceramics and crocheting and other activities under the same roof. Several encouraging plans were discussed. The meeting adjourned and coffee and cake was served. Crossroads club meets Crossroads club met Thursday March II at the home of Mrs. Billy Wells. There were 16 members and one visitor attending. Ruth Baron and Ann Dominguez made an interesting talk on Hung Kong, China. Mildred Wells served a secret recipe, nut and raisin spread. The president also asked for volunteers for 4-H Achievement Day in Amite on March 23. We will also be making cookies and sandwich spread. Cindy Newton gave a project leader report entitled "The Road to Improving Your Financial Health." Refreshments were served by hostess Mildred Wells.
