THE PONCHATOULA TIMES, MARCH 21, 1985, PAGE Irish eyes were smiling at Saturday's Parade awards to local personalities. Bridget Sweeney was chosen "Prettiest Colleen," Stanley Cowen was picked as "Most Handsome Irish Lad," and Buddy Rottman was honored for being the "Most Humorous Lepre- chaun." Members of Queen Kathleen Mount's royal Irish court included: Tanna Latshaw, Bliss McMahon, Tonya Meyn, Shania O'Bannon, Deirdre McMahon, Kathy Newton, Strader Dufreche, Anna McMahon, and Anaeliaue Daiqle. They all received trophies, comp.liments of Smilin' Joe McCarthy, as did Mayor Charles Gideon, ex-Mayor Buddy Dufreche, Jackie Vaughan, Fire Chief Erlo McLaurin, Police Chief Ernest Peltier, Grand Marshal Fr. MacLeay, Louis and Henrietta Meyer, Sheriff J. Edward Layrisson, and Mrs. lnez Layrisson. A trophy presented to Bryan T. The parade began in a most unique fashion, with the Smilin' Joe McCarthy Ponchatoula Handicap, a select field of top marathon runners who completed a Hammond-to-Ponchatoula course down Rana Road. William "Bill" O'Neil was first across the finish line at Pine Street and was greeted with a kiss by Ponchatoula's "Flower Lady" Mrs Violet Collier, who handed him an Irish tricolor flag attached to a shillelagh flagpole. O'Neil and the runners then jogged UP main street holding the flag. When they reached the front line of the waiting marchers the parade set off. And despite the rain, not a negative word was heard from marchers or bead catchers, who might as well have been out in the sunshine instead of a drizzle that stopped halfway through the march, to judge by the looks on their faces. Ambassadors from New Orleans Smilin'Joe McCarthy, Red Jack Burns and Shriner Clown AI Cummings were among the well-wishers at the Irish Family Party that followed. The occasion was marked by the awarding of trophies to the queen and her court on behalf of the children of the Irish Channel, and the presentation of other Patrick's Day Parade.
