Staff Report
It was when the Ponchatoula Police
Department nearly lost their Officer of
the Year, James McKnight, that the
drive began to raise money for bullet-
proof vests.
Thanks to work by local officers,
publicity in the local press and espe-
cially to the donations of numerous
individuals and groups the vests are
now in, 20 of them, enough for the
regular officers and the auxiliary mem-
bers.

Mary Carter wins council race
FROM PAGE ONE
Ponchatoula created the district coun-
cil seats approved by the U.S. Justice
Department under criteria used to
insure that black votes would not be
watered-down during municipal elec-
tions here. Tate, who says he enjoyed
support from both blacks and whites, is
white.
In fact, the first-time political candi-
date and lifelong resident of Poneha-
toula said that his showing in Satur-
day's district council race has left him
with a good taste for politics and stated
that be is already looking forward to a
future candidacy in another race.
For Mrs. Carter's part, she has stated
that it was her goal to complete the
work begun by her late husband
cleaning up city streets in the district on
Ponchatoula's southeast side and solv-
ing persistent health-threatening drain-
age problems there.
