• Charter vote
FROM PAGE ONE
Some of the most succinct post-
election comments came from Joe
Simpson. onetime prosecutor and a
man who learned firsthand how power-
ful the Frank Edwards machine was
when it turned on him in the second
primary of a district attorney's race,
forcing him to drop out as front-
runner:
"Frank Edwards has faded into
obscurity, he is a has-been. The
divisiveness started when he became
sheriff, not just north-south but Italians
and blacks pitted against the rednecks,
and it all hurt Tangipahoa Parish. This
parish needs to be healed.
"I was amazed some of those boxes
down there (in the southend) were
against the charter. The thinking
people of Amite voted for it. The police
jury system is a failure in Tangipahoa
Parish that cannot be resuscitated. We
are in a hopeless situation on this end
of the parish. You can't drive over 1_5
miles an hour on the roads up here."
Asked if the voters are likely to make
the same mistake here they did in St.
Tammany Parish (where they voted for
a new government and then voted
back in the same old political bunch
that served on the police jury) Simpson
replied. "I know there will be changes
in the northend. Some in the south will
face tough opposition, l believe the
charter will attract a different kind of
candidate from a different socio-
economic background, a better candi-
date."
Simpson went on to say that the
people will have to prepare themselves
for "a significant property tax to get this
parish back together, 1_5, 20, even
25 mills"

prices have dropped 3.4 cents since the
American Automobile Association's
December Fuel Gauge report.
Statistics gathered for April. 1985

Additionally. Easter travelers will find
approximately 20 percent of Louisiana's
gas stations open around the clock and
one-half of the stations throughout the
state will be open Easter Sunday'.
National Fuel Gauge figures show 19
percent of the stations surveyed open
on a 24-hour basis and two-thirds
