epitome of what Louisiana musicians
are capable of producing. They prove
that Louisiana can compete with the
rest of the nation as a favorable location
for the music inddstry," Ourso says.
He uses the careers of the three artists
as examples Fats Domino outsold
every American artist in commercial
record sales during the 1950s except
Elvis. Ourso says, "That's 65 million
records that were being played across
the nation, and that's the caliber of
talent in this state. Thats the kind of
artist that any producer seeks."
John Fred. of John Fred & His
Playboy Band, had the phenomenal hit
"Judy in Disguise." which held the
number one spot on the Top 40 charts

Still popular on the country and rock
circuits is Doug Kershaw. a self-rn,de
Cajun fiddler who learned to piay the
instrument when he was five years old.
He now plays 29 instruments, and his
music compels audiences to break into a
lively two-step to the rhythms of his
1960 hit "'Louisiana Man" and his 1961
follow-up, "Piggy Liggy Lo,"
Ourso says he is eager for the
campaign to begin
"When you think of the attractions
that Louisiana offers to investors.
developers, and promoters in the music
industry, the state has to win hands
(.jown.
"This campaign will remind the public
who we are and what we have to offer.
We've been sitting on a gold mine, just
as many residents of the state have been
sitting on oil wells There's a fortune
there, but it has to be developed before
any benefits can be realized '"
Our'r) explains, "Those oil wells may
eventually run dry. but the human
talent and business opportunities we
have will always be valuable.'

Ourso is emphatic in pointing out the
benefits of this program and what the
state will gain from it
"A lot of people can't envision
anyone but the artist gaining anything
from record sales. But you have to look
beyond that. There's the reproduction,
the marketing, the distributors, the radio
stations, the video studios, and many
other economic aspects of the music
industry that could operate very
comfortably in Louisiana. The
Louisiana Music Commission is taking
the lead in developing this industry in
the state The public will be hearing
more about this campaign." Ourso says.
As Fats Domino says in his radio
message, "Keep your ears peeled for
Louisiana Music."
