Teachers today
make less money
In Louisiana a beginning teacher
earns almost $3,000 less in today's
dollars than his or her counterpart in
1965, the year the state's first compre-
hensive teacher salary shedule was
adopted.
According to a State Department of
Education study, the beginning state
salary for a teacher with a bachelor's
degree was $4.400 in 1965. That was
the equivalent of $15.000 ih today's
dollars. However, the actual beginrling
teacher salary today is only about
$12,000, almost 20 percent below the
equivalent salary twenty years ago.
The difference is even more dramatic
at the top of the pay scale, A Ph. D.
with twelve years experience earns
about 37 percent less in today's dollars
than his or her 1965 counterpart.

held a stunt show Sunday.
There were over a dozen rides to
choose from and games to play
including gambling tables, an air brush
crew that was kept busy by festival
goers with their fire shirts, a Miller beer
crew and over 10 booths where food
was sold.
Lorie Hooover was crowned the 1985
Springfield Fire Queen Saturday at 2
p.m, in senior division. Brenda
Holland won in the junior division.
Stacey McKinney was the first runner
up in the junior division.
Amy Sance was named the Little Miss
Fire Festival Queen. Dozens of kids
participaied in the king and cueen
pageant.
The festival was made possible
through the combined efforts of Fire
Chief J.V. Wall and Mike Wall who
organized the committee chairmen and
officials; Cathy Davis, who did an
outstanding job in organizing Spring-
field's longest parade; Henrietta and
Jody Wall who together organized the
pageant participants: Harriet Roussea,
who supervised the Las Vegas night;
and Myrtle St. Cyr. who booked the
bands and organized entertainment at

Garden
of the
Month
Gardenettes awarded "Garden of the
Month" to Jack and Ann Fontaine, 301
Rene, for the month of April, an-
nounced Betty Rosson, chairman.
Although they moved to the area only
a year ago, the Fontaines have added a
variety of blooming jonquils, shastas
and petunias to the shrubs and trees
that were already there. A mixture of
flowering crabapples, azaleas, varie-
gated ligustrums and magnolia fuscatas
add color to the neat, well-manicured
appearance of the property, said
Rosson.
Formerly from Iowa and Connecticut,
the couple moved here from New
Orleans and find the rural atmosphere
a pleasant change, according to Mrs.
Fontaine. She added that they were
excited about the recognition as they
worked hard to keep their yard attrac-
tive.
No winner was announced for March
said Rosson, as the sign needed
cosmetic and functional restoration.

Who is that dapper silver haired'man of bearing seen driving back and for,.
across town in that luxurious Caclillac limosine? (Ask Miss Ruth at the
Greyhound).
Hey Dewey Ratcliffe, out Springfield way, if Springfield put away as much
beer as the lads did during the Fireman's Festival this past weekend every
week Fm sure your administration could attract a major brewery to the shores
of the Natalbany River (How about it fellas? Hobart, l'm sure, will do his
part).
l'm sure it's not a classic case of negative thinking down at my favorite
German bakery, but why does the phone number (386-9999) translate into
English 386-No No No No?
Inez Brinkley, poet, you are driving my tubby editor bonkers, slipping in
and out of the newsroom and always leaving behind a great poem and
disappearing without a word. He asked me to ask you to please stop long
enough for an interview (hey, that rhymes!)
Ron Morgan ole buddy, me and everyone else is sorry to see you down on
your back in hospital so please hurry and heal.
Bert Howes. the same goes for you. We may never need the lonely Maytag
repairman, but we need you.
And Joe Zaleski, just because your son-in-law Ron Latshaw is in the spare
parts business over at Himel does not mean that they are going to always
have parts that fit you. I don't think NAPA makes stock hearts and gall
bladders ole buddy, so please try and stay on Seventh Street and out of
Seventh Ward.
Raymond Charbonnet of Post Office fame is another one. He just came
back from Houston hospital with a brand spanking new kidney•
I want all of you fellows to show up at the pond from now on. every
morning at six. It will be laps and plenty of pond water until l've got you back
in tip-top shape. Now that Inez Layrisson is back in prime condition I'm
planning on putting her on as official trainer, so be forewarned?
