be slight.
Since this is a TAX ON PROPERTY
ONLY, homeowners and business
owners legitimately ask how much this
will cost them in additional taxes. A
horrreowner with up to 5,000
t
homestead exemp ion will xpay
NOTHING. A business asseod
$I0,000 would pay $2.17/month or
$26.00/year in additional taxes. A
property owner with property valued at
$I00,000, not subject to homestead
exemption, would pay total tax of
$74.55 each year or $6.22/month.
Monies derived from this
supplementary tax will provide for
necessary additions to equipment, staff,
and book collections. Needed repairs to
buildings and replacements for
bookmobiles are being considered as
well.
All aspects of library service will be
drastically affected if the tax does not
pass. The hours the library is open will
be reduced in all branches There will be
no Summer Reading Program and no
adult programming. There will be
reduced service for children--curtailed
storyhours, fewer hours open at times
that are convenient for school children
to use the library. Additional funds for
badly needed books will not be
available. There will be severely
reduced bookmobile service. Library
staff would be reduced: people would
be laid off.
This is the fifth in a series of informa-
tive articles about Tangipahoa Parish
Library.

Willing Workers met
By JUNE W. PITrMAN
The Willing Workers Homemaker
Club held its April meeting on Monday
at the Ponchatoula Community
Garden Center Building.
The meeting was called to order by
Vice President Lucille Charbonnet in
the absence of the president, Rita
Murtagh.
Twenty-four members answered roll
call. Safety ProjeciLeader Sybil Miller
gave an interesting talk on the subject
"The Five Medicine Guidelines."
Virgie Benoit told the members about
the children who participate in the
Bowling Special Olympics. It was a
heart-warming presentation.
After the meeting refreshments were
served by hostesses Ruby Dean, Sybil
Miller and Maureen Felder. The club
members all joined in for the White
Elephant Sale; each member was asked
to bring something for the sale and
Auctioneer June Pittman started the
members bidding. The sale was such a
success, and so much fun, that the club
will hold another White Elephant sale at
the May meeting and each member
agreed to bring an article for the sale.
HTLV testing
for AIDS
Blood banks in Louisiana will soon
begin using a newly-developed blood
test to screen all blood donations for
antibodies to a virus associated with
acquired immune deficiency syndrome
(AIDS).
According to Dr. Sandra Robinson,
State Health Officer and Secretary of
the Department of Health and Human
Resources, the HTLV 1II antibody test is
not capable of determining whether one
has, or may develop, AIDS.
"One purpose of the test is to further
research directed at curing and
eliminating AIDS. The other is to
reduce the possibility of spreading the
HTLV 111 virus through transfusions,"
Dr. Robinson explains.
She continues, "When used by blood
banks, this antibody screening test
will lessen the possibility of blood con-
taminated with HTLV Ill from entering
the blood banking system. Current
estimates are that two to six out of one
thousand low risk p,.,ople will have evi-
dence of ant!bodies to HTLV."
bince no vaccine has yet been
developed to prevent AIDS and there is
no known method to repair the
damaged immune system of an AIDS
patient, the best way to stop the spread
of this disease is to break what seems to
be the chain of transmission.
"if you are in an increased risk group,
do not donate blood for transfusion,
organs for transplantation, or sperm for
artificial insemination," advises Dr.
Robinson.
"Other safety precautions include
practicing safe sex by avoiding the
exchange of body fluids during sex; not
sharing needles; and not exchanging
toothbrushes, razors, or other items
which might be contaminated with
blood."

knew his God was waiting for him with wide open arms.
Larry Carpenter, the young State Trooper who was called by God to
