+ - THE PONCHATOULA TIMES, MAY 16, 2013, PAGE 2 John Dudek I pick the contenders By JOHN DUDEK Times Columnist With almost a quarter of the season in the books, I figured it was time to see which teams are separating themselves from the pack. In the American league, it is no surprise that the New York Yankees are perched atop of the AL East standings. What is surprising is how poorly the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sex are playing. Beat writers from around the country were expecting much better play from these two squads. As the season progress- es, I think both teams will turn it around and get themselves into the playoff hunt. In the AL Central, the De- troit Tigers and Cleveland In- dians are the two teams that are battling for the top spot, but I'll give the edge to Detroit. The Tigers have arguably the best pitcher in the game in Justin Verlander, and a strong group of hitters to back up a great pitching staff. The AL West is the Texas Rangers' division, period. No other team even has a win- ning record. I would be abso- lutely shocked if the Rang- ers didn't have a double PLEASE SEE PAGE 4 By THOMAS KUHN Times Columnist This week the American Le- gion and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians will sponsor a fund-raising event for the Av- enue of Flags. The dinner will be held at Bantaa's Fleur de Lis this Friday, May 17 at 6:30 pm. A small donation of $25 per person will be asked of attend- ees. that will include a meal and beverage. A cash bar will be available. There will be various groups and individuals to pro- vide entertainment. This will be a worthwhile event and well worth the admission. I hope to see all of Ponchatouia there to assist in this fund-raiser. In the following weeks many local students will be graduat- ing from high school or the uni- versity. I wish to congratulate those students and their par- ents in these achievements. For the college graduate this will be Thomas Kuhn The task at hand is now to se- cure that college position that perhaps will fulfill their life's aspirations. I hope all of your wishes are fulfilled. For a high school graduate, many choices have to be made that will affect your life. These choices will be the formation of your future and will span the remainder of the individual's working life. A big decision! These choices can be made easi- a nenw beginning. Team owner is Ms. Christine Urrata who in a telephone inter- view provided The Times with some background information on the team and its history. "I did not play football. I didn't know I could play and now I'm in my forties. We do have women in their forties playing, but you really can't manage and play. I didn't know women's football existed. I have always been a big Saints fan. I was on my way to Canton to see the Saints play in the Hall of Fame game when I chanced on the Women's Football Champi- onship at Hines Field in Pitts- burg. I was determined to correct that situation. You will notice that Mojo has the same black and gold colors as the Saints," the woman's foot- ball team owner told The Pon- chatoula Times, adding: "I took the Saints' fleur de lis and turned its elements into an amulet, a magic charm, by turn- ing the top arms up to make a "W" which of course stands for woman, and I turned the bot- tom cross down to make an anchor (see photo of the Mojo's logo)." The Mojo women, like the Saints, play on a full 100 yard field with 15 minute quarters and a 15 minute half time, just like the NCAA, under whose rules the Mojo and their 53 op- posing teams compete. One teammate's day job is being a nurse, and her spare time is split between the New Orleans Mojo and the Voodoo, the New Orleans arena football squad. Currently, the Mojo team- mates play for no pay, "not now, at least," the Ponchatoula foot- baller said with an obvious vi- sion of becoming a paid profes- sional player once word gets out that the team exists, and they start filling stadium seats. Asked how she was attracted to the former boys-only game, Ms. Troulliet replied, "My mother inspired me to join. This interview will be a surprise to her."
