mammogram annually. Women in high
risk groups --those with mothers or
sisters with a history of bilateral or pre-
menopausal breast cancer and those
who have had breast cancer --should
have a mammogram annually.
Mammography is not recommended
for women in their teens and 20's unless
they have symptoms of breast cancer.
This is advised because women in their
teens and 20's are more sensitive to
radiation and far less likely to develop
breast cancer.
Mammography can detect some
breast cancers as early as 2 years before
an experienced examiner can detect
them. Since mammography can detect
breast cancer in its early stages when it is
most treatable, as many as 30 percent
more women can be cured. This makes
mammography extremely valuable in
the diagnosis of early breast cancer.
