Spurs Sweep
" Last week, in this very col-
umn, I predicted that the San
Antonio Spurs would make
quick work of the Memphis
Grizzlies. Even I didn't think it
would be this quick.
The Spurs won four straight
games against the young Griz-
zlies. Many thought that the
Spurs were too old. Maybe they
had lost a step.
After all, their best player,
Tim Duncan, is thirty seven
years old. In basketball years,
he is officially a dinosaur.
Even though this series came
and went in the blink of an eye,
it was not void of great games.
In fact, two of the first three
games took an overtime period
to decide a winner. But in those
extra periods, it was all San An-
tonio.
The Grizzlies worked ex-
tremely hard to get to overtime,
and then simply ran out of gas.
Next up for the Spurs, is anoth-
er trip to the NBA finals.
Most likely, San Antonio will
take on the defending champion
Miami Heat. The Heat are led
by superstars Lebron James
and Dwayne Wade. If you re-
call, it was these same Spurs
that thwarted Lebron James in
his first attempt at winning an
NBA championship. The Spurs

A large group of individu-

.together Saturday morning to
honor those military veterans
buried in the Ponchatoula Cem-

After a ceremony of singing the
National Anthem, some speech-
: es, and playing of bagpipes, the
gathered group placed Ameri-
can flags on the graves of the
identified veterans.
Nearly 500 flags were placed
by the group. It was gratifying
to participate in this function,
:and I was astonished by the
"Tmmber of citizens participat-
ing in the activity and more
amazed by the number of vet-
erans who are memorialized in
the cemetery.
Having been born just be-
fore the Japanese bombing of
Pearl Harbor, I only have faint
memories of World War II. For
some aspects of those years I do
have a recollection. I recall for

and Daddy going to the grocery
store to get food and having to
use stamps to get many food
items--rationing! Such food
items as sugar, meat and coffee
were items I remember being
on the rationing list. Dad would
often speak of the chicory used
rather than good dark-roasted
coffee. Sweets were limited to
canned berries that were made
into jams and jellies. Dad
worked at a milk plant, so we
