McMAHON Times On Wheels Columnist With an overall 5-star federal safety rating, great looks, and plenty of power for the long haul, the RX 350 by Lexus is the best vehicle I have seen this year for a guaranteed fun family vaca- tion. The RX 350 even comes equipped with own tool kit and a first aid kit. Those are the last two items on a very long list of safety features that could reasonably be found on a lunar rover. The listing of on- board airbags includes those safety devices plus knee airbags for the front seats in addition to the advanced front airbags, and the front and rear seat mounted side airbags. Lexus equipped the RX 350 with its "Smart Stop Technol- ogy." Of course it comes equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), but that just starts the list, which goes on to include Electronic Brake force Dis- tribuation (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) all under the com- puter brain called Vehicle Dy- namics Integrated Manage- ment (VDIM). The large and roomy RX 350 boasts 3-point safety belts for all the seats with height adjustment, plus front active headrests, LED daytime run- ning lights, front wipers that know when it's raining and act accordingly, a safety connec- tion to the outside world that notifies safety officials in the event of a collision, and stolen vehicle location too, plus a SOS button, a tire pressure monitor- ing system, all backed up by an enhanced Roadside Assistance program. I wanted to get to the safety items first, because as a Dad, I know what my fellow Dads are looking for when they are seek- ing a roadworthy vehicle for their most precious cargo, not just when planning a vacation trip to the mountains or to the coast. My gearhead buddies will want to know that the 270 horse- power engine on this land yacht is a 3.5 liter 4-cam 24-valve V6 with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-I), all yoked to an 8-speed transmission obe- dient to paddle shifters when you are in the mood. An F-Sport tuned suspen- sion and electric powered rack & pinion steering completes the list of performance features on the RX 350. Now let us visit the "Luxury and Convenience Fea- tures" so you can see why I call the RX 350 a "land yacht." The RX 350 has a sound sys- tem superior in every way to the one I have in my home. The Lexus Premium Audio System comes equipped with an automatic sound levelizer (ASL) with an in-dash 6-disc CD autochanger, USB iPod/ mp3 control. Bluetooth technol- ogy, XM Satellite Radio, and so you stay comfortable while tak- ing in the tunes, an Auto Dual Zone Climate Control System with rear vents. You really do want to let your honey drive the RX 350 because the back seat is one you really must experience. The AC gets to you not just via the backseat ducts, but also through the perforated leath- er seats. The cabin interior is trimmed in genuine wood. Car- peted floor mats come standard. The 40/20/40 split rear seat re- clines and slides. Headrests are height-adjust- able in every seat and, so long as you have the electronic key fob, your RX 350 knows you and will unlock automatically so you can enter the cabin.
