Ponchatoula baseball fans,

"There are so many things that none
of us will ever forget. The team grew so
fast and as the team grew, the seasons
got longer," recalled Mrs. Lessard.
"We were playing tournaments with
other towns long before the arrwal of
Ponchatoula's Dixie Youth Baseball

In fact, I'd say that the team set a
milestone in Ponchatoula baseball,"
recalled Mrs. Lessard who these days

The team of Wadesboro cousins
played some rather unusual qames, as
remembered by Mrs. Lessard: "It was so
funny the time the team clressed up in
dresses like girls and played baH! Better
yet, the team even played donkey

today's baseball the parents were there

The baseball seasons were considerably
different then. The team began playing
when the weather warmed up following
winter and they played until football
season. Several seasons started in
February and the cousins played twice a
week for over half the year, recalls Mrs.
Lessard.
"They definitely set the pace for
generations to folh)w," concluded Mrs.
Lessard.

by neighboring residents who are also

Wildlife starvation caused by area deforestation

East of Ponchatoula, on Davis Lane
off Dunson joad lives a real fox!
Years ago, the land surrounding the
John Ford residence on Davis Lane,
was thickly populated with all forms of
wildlife• Time passed, people moved in
and cleared the land that fed the wildlife.
"The people have chased all the
animals away and those who haven't
left are starving," complained Ford.

Ponchatoula's Dixie Youth Rookie
All-Stars advanced into the 10-year-
olds semi-final bracket Monday, July 22
when Ponchatoula defeated the hapless
Cefalu team on a Tommy Ragan run, 6-5.
At deadline time noon Tuesday the
team's fate lay before it if teh rookies
pullled off another win Tuesday night in
the consolation bracket, they would
play for the district championship
Wednesday in Loranger, unless
postponed by weather (which would
allow readers of this report to attend the
game)•
Ponchatoula took the lead by a run in
the first inning Monday but was tied by
Cefalu in the fourth frame. Hammond's
rookies drew home two base runners in
the fifth while Ponchatoula edged up at
bat to score three and win the game.
"Tommy Ragan and Bobby Wolfe
were just super on the mound," later
remarked Margie "Mrs. Baseball"
Lessard. That they were. Tommy and
Bobby struck out six Cefalu batters and
walked only three. Surprisingly enough,
Hammond scored on three walks and
two singles.
Jason McMorris and Jeffrey Berthelot,
who together gained the lead in the
initial inning for Ponchatoula and also
led in scoring. Jeffrey commanded the
scorebooks when he went three for
three on two singles and a triple. Not
only did Jeffrey lead in both hits and
runs, but stolen bases with two.
Jason McMoms followed closeby in
runs with two as Tommy Ragan scored
Ponchatoula's winning run in the fifth
frame.
Jason McMorris, Tommy Ragan and
Bobby Wolfe rapped out the team s
doubles as Bobby also led in sacrifices
with two taken in the final inning.
Trey Harris led Ponchatoula in walks
with two, followed by Tommy Ragan
who was walked once.
Overall, Tommy Ragan led the team
in RBrs with two as Jeffrey Berthelot
and Jason McMorris attributed one each
to the list.
Rookies defeat
St. Tammany
Ponchatoula's Bobby Wolfe and
Tommy Ragan dominated the pitchers
mound striking out 14 St. Tammany
batters Saturday, July 20 when
Ponchatoula won 13-2.
St. Tammany's runs were scored on a
walk and an error while Ponchatoula
rapped off 12 hits in which there were
four doubles, a triple, and seven singles.
Trey Harris cracked off the team's
triple while Bobby Wolfe released two
superior doubles. Chris Flannagan and
Gene Malone followed Bobby in
doubles with one while Jason McMoms
and Jeffrey Berthelot led in singles with
two each. Others listing singles were
Tommy Ragan, Bobby Wolfe and Trey

area and clearing activity conducted
by a wood products firm for the defor-
estation. "Literally thousands of acres
that feed and house, animals were
destroyed," said Ford.
As a result, he said, only five acres of
land exists in that area now and the
local woods animals are forced to
search for food in other ways, said
Ford.
Dog food placed outside soon started
disappearing throughout the area.
Upon further investigation, Ford
found the culprits and that's when he
met "Lady Red."
"Lady Red." is a red fox who has
grown to depend on civilian scraps and
domestic feed for the survival of
her nest of pups nearby Ford's place.
"She now feeds at my home for an
hour at a time. She carefully makes her
way to my house and picks up the food
I left for her on the driveway and takes
the food to her den of starving pups,"
explained Ford.
"It soon became a habit and I started
giving her scraps and feed regularly.
She's come from a thin wirey creature
.Stars annihilate Cefaltt
In an ending composite, Ponchatoula
Sc6ted six runs taken on nine hits in
which there were three doubles, a triple,
two stolen bases, three walked batters,
four strike outs and four individual RBI's.
Hammond's Cefalu team struck out
four Ponchatoula batters and walked
three. In scoring, Cefalu brought home
five runs on eight hits in which there was
one triple.
to a healthy-sized animal. As for her
pups, I very seldom see them because
"Lady Red" would sense my being
there," said Ford.
"Lady Red is only one fox of millions
and one animal in trillions who are
starved by the destruction of woods for
timber. What about all the others? Who
will see thai they survive? Most will die
and that's how animals become
extinct," concluded Ford.
