Washington to place a mOOlle home on
her property on South Third Street. The
council will have the final vote on the
rezoning.
At the request of Councilman Perkins
the exception is being made because of
an apparent misunderstanding between
Mrs. Washington and a clerk at City
Hall.
The clerk gave Mrs. Washington an
application for moving the mobile home
to a lot on North Third Street that is
zoned for mobile home.
The clerk realized the error after Mrs.
Washington placed a down payment on
the mobile home and later that day
came back with the application, and the
clerk informed Mrs. Washington that
the area is zoned A-6.
The council advised Mrs. Ruby West,
to request her property be rezoned for a
mobile home at the next Planning and
Rezoning Commission meeting, which
will be August 13.
In other action:
• Cindy Newton, a member of the
Mayor's Committee for a Better Poncha-
toula informed the board she has found
volunteers to work at the museum.
• The council gave Mayor Gideon
its approval to ask the Department of
Transportation and Development to five
lane Louisiana 22 between Third and
Ford Street. Gideon said, "'The DOTD
has already included in this year's
budget an overlay project for Louisiana
22 between the railroad tracks and
Louisiana 445." He added, "I would
like to see the road wident before the
overlay project begins."
• The council decided to research
the cost of cutting down giant dead oak
trees.
• The council asked a representative
from Rogers Production, Pennsylvania,
if they are still in the business to come to
the city, at no cost, to discuss a 125-
year anniversary celebration for
Ponchatoula.
FROM PAGE ONE
will replace the city's old map and
zoning ordinance, adopted in 1966.
"Mobile homes account for 36
percent of new homes," Councilman
Dave Perkins said. Mobile homes are a
fact of life and we need to deal with
them properly."
The new map designates more area
in the city as A-8 districts (high density)
and A- I0 districts (mobile homes).
On the northeast side of the city the"
area near West and Ford Street. Texas
quarters on thesoutheast side of the city
remain zoned a A-8 on the proposed
map.
The area near Jackson and Plum
streets on the proposed map on the
southwest side of the city is designated
as an A-8 district (High Density urban).
But mobile homes may be located in the
area.
,Peltier and Triche trailer parks also
located on the southwestside of the city
are zoned A-10 (for mobile homes) on
the map.
"I am glad to see that the map calls
for more mobile homes areas in the
city." Councilman-at-large Julian
Dufreche said.
"This zoning is still discriminatory
because these are mainly black areas,
Councilman Perkins said, adding, "I
want to make this map the least dis-
criminatory as possible."
"The original city limits are zoned for
very few mobile homes," Dufreche said.
He added: "There just isn't room for
mobile homes in that _area. The lots
there are too small and there just isn't
anymore room for mobile homes," he
said.
In other action related to mobile
homes, the council decided to
temporarily lift its moratorium on mobile
homes, to consider the placement of a
mobile home on 535 South third street,
which is zoned A-6, single family.
The council gave the Planning and
Zoning Commission permission to
consider a request from Mrs. Diane
without those pickups. And when ,i
asked him how much we owed him he
said, nothing. One time his truck broke
down on a Friday and he made a
special trip on Sunday to haul 0
garbage for free. Wayne Rottmann is
wonderful."
The police jury has since let a contrad
that calls for domestic
starting August 5. But
local company is still very much in
business and now specializes in
commercial accounts, including trail
parks, apartment buildings, and
businesses.
"We are not out of business (as I
result of the police jury's new garba
collection contract). We have dor
good for the community, and we are
here to stay," emphatically stated IVb'i.
Gayle Rottmann, who helps h'
husband Wayne run the business.
