eenies debut in QuadoA
THE PONCHATOULA TIMES, SEPTEMBER 5, 1985, PAGE FIVE
By DUANE E. HARRIS
Sports Editor
Ponchatoula High School's Green
Wave football team will be facing its
toughest schedule in history.
However, Coaches Sidney Wilkinson,
Steve Grigas, Randy Booth, Greg
Martin and Greg Fischer will be sending
a highly-seasoned lineup into the
Upcoming football wars
The Greenies suffered a loss of 13
Seniors going into the new season but
file Wave has a lot going for it. The
team will be led by a fine core of
returning offensive veterans that should
make it more active or the scoreboard-
plenty of fireplug running backs, a Class
-A quarterback, a pro-style defensive
front and overall senior leadership and
experience.
Ponchatoula will be led offensively by
quarterback Asa Faulkner. Drills listed
Asa the team's number one candidate
for quarterback this year. He finished at
.47 percent in pass completions for 890
Yards last year and you'll agree that in
light of his past performance, any team
ith Asa at the throttle offensively is
und to be the one to beat in any prep
race
Shawn Manchette and Marc Ridgedell
will start off the team's core of offensive
lineman as returning veterans.
The team's line leadership comes
from tackles Russell Rock and Shawn
lanchette playing defense and Shane
Bush and Marry Booth playing offense,
Doug Cowart and James Fambro will
lead as the team's heavyweight line-
backers and are said to be the team's
Strongest by the coaches.
Ponchatoula's running game is also a
fine shape. Filled with real game-
Winning savvy are running backs Henry
Powell. Clem McKay, Odis Cooper and
ut of the Quad-A ,season, Henry
Owell will be the team s logical starting
Point. Six foot one inch, 210 pound
Srnilino Wavettes
Never underestimate the power of a
avette. That was only part of what
onchatoula High Wavette Sarah
Powell, the team's top kicker, averaged
41 yards per punt last year when he
lighted up 13 of 15 extra points and
went five for seven in field goals.
Powell, as a junior last year. was one
of the team's leading running backs who
scored 10 touchdowns and became an
8-AAA All District choice when he
rushed 1026 yards. He was also
nominated as the team's most valuable
defensive player of 1984.
"Size will be our main strength,"
pointed out Wilkinson in regards to the
team's defensive department. In that
heavyweight department, the average
weight of linemen (tackles and ends) is
approximately 200 pounds.
Unfortunately. Ponchatoula bids
farewell to a noted producer in the
offensive department Mike Matherne.
Due to injuries. Mike will not play
through his senior year,
Matherne, the team's running back
sensation, sustained neck injuries last
year and repeated the same infliction
this year during pre-season scrimmages.
He is prohibited from playing actively
but aids the team whenever offensive
knowledge of training is needed
"This was going to be my year as a
senior. But. after iniuring vertebrates in
my neck over and over. doctors told me
that if I continue to play, it will paralyze
me if l'm hit there again," explained
Matherne.
"'Anytime a team loses a key starter
like that, it affects everybody. There's
no doubt that his absence will affect the
team," pointed out Wilkinson,
In short, size and key skill players will
dominate the turf for PHS.
Other strategic improvements for the
Greenies includes a multiple front
defensive line. no target receivers and a
strong secondary.
You can also look for a strong pitch
and catch team. Steve Hebert and Clem
McKay will be the ones to look for in the
kickoff return department as Clem and
Henry Powell will run deep as running
backs.

night's game.
