J.V. Greenies harness victory THE PONCHATOULA TIMES, SEPTEMBER 12, 1985, SEC. A., PAGE i'" ............................ By DUANE E. HARRIS Sports Editor St. Paul's Wolves of Covington barked up the wrong tree Thursday, September 5 when the visitors were devoured by the JV Greenies 12-0 in Cypress Stadium. As expected, Poncha- toula dominated the game in every aspect. Shawn Hutson picked up the initial kickoff for a short gain while the Greenies held onto the ball for the following 12 plays. A Carl Disher pitch- out left to Merlin Allen clinched Poncha- toula's first touchdown. Ponchatoula's challenging defense held the Wolves down to only five plays in the first quarter. In the second period, Carl Disher pulled the team closer to paydirt and added 30 yards passing on one attempt, Disher, although under heavy attack, released a startling spiral to Todd Hebert for a 35 yard gain. Quick pitches to Allen, Hebert and Jason Adams put the JV in scoring range. The Greenies then saw their chance to get on the board again when quarter- back Carl Disher bolted a short look-in pass to Bradley Watts for a six yard touchdown play Ponchatoula led 12-0. It was then that Ponchatoula's offense took to the air while the defense dug down to business. The Wolves took the punt after half- time but were unable to pick up a first down. The Wolves were forced to punt right back on fourth down and 17 yards to o, From the coffin corner came JV Greenie Shane Dufrene who leaped up and swatted down the St. Paul punt which Ponchatoula recovered. Todd Hebert gained five yards on a pitch out and missed a 20 yard pass attempt, Merlin Allen picked up two yards on a handoff while Lance Vitter came from hibernation off the bench long enough to recover a fumble at the snap. The final period saw options carried out by Jarold Partier and Shawn Hutson. QB Carl Disher increased his number of aerial attempts but bobbled two at the snap, Shane Dufrene and Joel Settoon were both credited with sacks and the Greenies were penalized twice for 15 yards on a clipping charge and illegal motion• Credited as the team's strongest effort made offensively, St. Paul threatened to score with four minutes remaining in the game. Ponchatoula's Shawn Hutson drew back to punt but the snap cleared over his head. Shawn was attacked and didn't gain the yardage that would have awarded Ponchatoula the ball. Spotted at the three yard line, St. Paul still couldn't swing it in. Joel Settoon dropped one quarterback for his first game sack for a yardage loss, Shane Dufrene hammered a receiver into the dirt for another loss while two incomplete pass attempts ended their scoring frenzy. Ponchatoula punted right back. St. Paul scooped up on the return for a 67 yard gain. But the run was Called back on a penalty. Ponchatoula won the game 12-0. The JV Greenies completed 142 yards of total offense. Two touchdowns were gained on 49 yards passing, 93 yards rushing and 70 yards punting. Merlin Allen led in rushing with 45 yard on 12 carries for a 3.7 yards per ! carry average• Todd H.eben tallowed with 30 yards gained on nine carries. Jason Adams rushed for I0 yards on three carries. Shawn Hutson picked up six yards on four carries while Jarold Portier attributed two yards on--e carry.
