Wave washes out St. Paul Wolves44-0
By DUANE E. HARRIS
Sports Editor
Ponchato'ula's Green ' Wave
annihilated the St. Paul Wolves 44-0,
Friday, Sept. 6.
Ponchatoula arttficed the plays that
dominated the game.
The all-male private school found the
figures hard to swallow too" The
Greenies completed a massive total of
484 yards offense; the highest total
listed in 13-AAAA action thus far this
season.
Ponchatoula's offensive strategies
kept the ball in the air and" off the
ground. Senior Asa Faulkner led the
aerial attack with 128 yards passing,
averaging 50 percent. Secondary
quarterback Carl Disher added 89 yards
passing for 60 percent.f
On the ground, Clem McKay broke
loose for 106 yards rushing on 10
ca,es, an average of 10.6 yards per
carry. (Clem broke last year's highest
game average of eight yards per carry)
Mike Hutches made his debut against
St. Paul in rushing and finished with 75
yards gained rushing on 15 carries.
Meanwhile, Henry Powell, who led in
rushing last week in the Jamboree
against Kentwood, spread out 65 yards
rushing on nine carries, an average of
7.2 yards per carry. Powell averaged
3.7 yards per carry last week.
Scoring proved to be as easy as
flipping a switch for Ponchatoula and
five foot five inch, 135 pound senior
Clem McKay was the source of power.
St. Paul took the kickoff and picked
up a first down. But incomplete passes
and a quarterback sack made by Shawn
Manchette gave Ponchatoula the ball.
Henry Powell pulled the team six
yards closer on a handoff before
Ponchatoula scored a touchdown on
one 59 yard play.
Clem McKay captured a 20 yard
spiked pass from Asa Faulkner and
literally flew into the end zone to score.
Powell's extra point left Ponchatoula
leading 7-0 in the first two minutes of
the game.
Powelrs kick to St. Paul almost
ended up as a field goal when he
cleared the end zone on a 60 yard plus
kick.
The Wolves, spotted at the 20,
gained only two yards on an up to the
middle hand-off before they gave the
ball right back. In fact, the St. Paul
quarterback put it in the hands of
Shawn Johnson, who intercepted it at
the 40 yard line.
Ponchatoula gained a first down on
short runs made by Powell, Hutches
and McKay and before getting on the
scoreboard. One minute and 10 sec-
onds after scoring, Ponchatoula scored
again when Asa Fau[kner's 3,5 yamar(]
touchdown pass connected with Brett
Chatelain. Chatelain had only one
catch like that last year. Powell's extra
point put 14 points in Ponchatoula's
score column.
Into the second quarter, Henry
Powell showed why he is the team's
top kicker. Powell roiled a 35 yard boot
between the goal posts for a field goal
after Ponchatoula executed seven
plays to get in Powell's range.
Powell then put his squared toe detes
back on and kicked one past the end
zone to St. Paul.
The Wolves' offense gained 18 yards
and a first down before Shawn John-
son picked off his second interception
of the night at the 38 yard line.
Mike Hutches capped off the 72 yard,
eight play drive to score. That drive
hosted some heroics displayed by Dar-
ten "Boo Boo" Landry, Odis Cooper,
Asa Faulkner and Clem McKay.
Darren Landry ran deep in hopes of
picking up a first down on third down
and eight. Faulkner, under heavy
attack escaped being sacked and

connected with Brett Chatelain for a
35 yard TD play. Faulkner was given
the area through the efforts of
lineman Shawn Manchette (67) who
single-handedly safeguarded Asa on
this play during Ponchatoula's 414-0
bombed one to Imdry over h head. The Greenies went to the scoreboard
But Landry, the six foot two inch, 24(] twice in the third period. St. Paul fum-
pound sophomore defensive end, bled on their own 38 and it was re-
slapped the ball in mid-air and bobbled covered by Ponchatoula. Two plays
later, John Brown grabbed a 20 yard
it for six yards. Landry finally grasped
the ball and the first down.
Odis Cooper made a tremendous
catch, Henry Powell was injured and
Faulkner brought the team within two
yards of scoring on a short look-in pass
to Mike Hutches. Hutches barged up
the middle for the score. Powell re-
turned from the bench and increased
the score to 24-0.

Odis Cooper brought that one in for the
score. Ponchatoula failed on the two-
point conversion and later won 4,4-0.
Ciem McKay made one final threat to
score only 30 seconds later. Following
only a four yard St. Paul return, McKay
picked off an interception. The Green-
ies played dead, rolled over nd won
their season opener 44-0.
If Ponchatoula can keep a similar
pace against Northshore Friday, Sep-
tember 134 then the Greenies will have
tested their hottest competition.
