7hkin, a.teu' minutes runt, to prepare for a medical emergency
ca n help you respond quickly f one should ezer occur.
A medical emergency isn't
something we like to think about.
But if you prepare now, you can
rest easy.
All it takes is a bit of planning.
First, you need to gather all the
medical and emergency informa-
tion that's essential. The chart at
right will help you. Second, you
need to keep a basic first aid kit
in your home and car. Finally, you
need to know what to expect.
Any emergency, serious or
minor, can be handled quickly
and calmly when you've taken
these precautions.
The information
you'll need
If you do nothing else, be sure
to keep a list of emergency tele-
phone numbers by the phone. Put
down the number of any service
that could possibly help during
an emergency.
You're also going to need a
record of medical data. Informa-
tion on allergies, medications and
medical history can help greatly
in determining treatment. It allows
the doctor to quickly diagnose an
injury or illness, and find an effec-
tive solution.
The one thing many people
forget to bring is insurance infor-
mation. Westpark will not delay
treatment of a serious emergency
to obtain this information. At
some point, however, you'll have
to supply the policy number to
assure proper insurance billing.
This can be a lot of informa-
tion. That's why we've provided
the chart at right to help you
gather and organize these facts.
The chart will make it easier and
faster to fill out hospital forms
and can speed up treatment of
any injury or illness.
Once completed, make copies
of the chart and keep one by each
phone, and in each car. That way,
the information will always be
available.
Important
first aid
materials
Keep a basic first aid kit nearby,
so you can provide the temporary
assistance needed before and
during transport to the hospital.
These kits are easy to obtain
from a local sporting goods store
or drug store. Or if you wish, you
can make your own. Be sure to
include adhesive strips, gauze.
bandages, tape, scissors, alcohol,
sterile cleaning pads, anti-infectant
and elastic wraps.
Another necessity is a first
aid book. Westpark Community
Hospital can supply you one free
of charge. The book explains
how to handle common house-
hold and outdoor emergencies.
You can buy similar books at
most bookstores.
If immediate care is needed,
check these books for treatment.
And act quickly.
A key to a quick reaction is
knowing the fastest route to
Westpark. Using the map in the
chart, plot the most direct path
to the hospital and memorize it.
What happens
in the
emergency room?
Knowing what to expect once you
arrive at the hospital can elimi-
nate much of the anxiety involved
in an emergency. Here's how it
works at Westpark.
Upon arrival, a nurse will
determine the seriousness of
the emergency. Naturally, this
also determines the amount of
time you must wait.
You, or someone with you, will
be asked to provide the informa-
tion mentioned earlier. It's quick
and simple if you bring your chart.
From there, you'll be taken to
one of the treatment rooms. Here,
you'll meet your doctor.
Your full-
service hospital
The Westpark emergency room
is staffed by experienced, well-
trained physicians and RN's.
Twenty-four hours a day.
We have six fully equipped
treatment rooms, including
trauma and special procedure
rooms. And all the advantages
of a full-service hospital are only
steps away. This means instant
access to intensive care and
cardiopulmonary equipment, a
full-service laboratory and many
other specialized facilities.
Your family medical diary
Complete this form for all your family members. The information will prove to be of great assistance
in the case of a medical emergency. Keep the chart near a phone, where you won't lose it.
And always take one with you when you travel.
