SPORTS Amite shatters Wave winning streak By DUANE E. HARRIS Sports Editor Fans who packed into Cypress Stadium to see Ponchatoula High's first home game scheduled on the 1985 gridiron did not see a football game. What they saw was a battle of the unbeatens between the Greenies and Amite Friday, September 20. Ponchatoula fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and went on to lose to the Warriors 41-14. The game proved to be Ponchatoula's slowest match of season. The Greenies compiled 148 yards rushing and generally kept the ball in the air. Quarter- back Asa Faulkner went to the air for 96 yards which included an 11 yard screen pass to Darrin Landry for the touch- down and a six yard opener to Brett Chatelain in the fourth quarter on which he scored. Chatelain added to his record another touchdown which totals five in three games. From the outset it was clear that there was no lost love between the combatants, both district leaders. Passing, Ponchatoula quarterback Asa Faulkner delivered a slap in the face to Amite. He was the game's leading passer. Amite took the 42 yard Darren Hemphill kick and scampered all the way to the Ponchatoula seven yrd line on return. However, the visiting Warriors were pushed back I0 yards on a penalty. Successful tackles made by Henry Powell put Amite in a third-down-and- eight situation. On fourth down, Amite rendered around the line on a sneak that put them at the one yard line, when the Warrior clashed heads with Sean Johnson. Johnson kept Amite from scoring on that attempt and almostaud Poncha- toula completely when Amitf'-ambled at the one yard line. The Warriors recovered it two inches from the end zone. Amite then barreled over for the touchdown and the added extra point gave the visitors a 7-0 lead in the first minute and a half of play time. Clem McKay took the deep Amite kick and cut through the bombarding line for a 17 yard gain before coming down at the 35 yard line. Faulkner went incomplete to McKay, was sacked, and Henry Powelrs rush to the right forced the Greentes to punt frm their own 37. Amite scored at will. On second down and nine, quarterback Michael Carr went long and connected with Robert Terrell for a 53 yard touchdown play. Amite led 14-0. Clem McKay captured the kick and reeled in 12 yards before coming to a stop at the 30. The Greenies were unable to move on their possession. A sacking loss of seven yards and two short gains by McKay and Powell confronted Poncha- toula with a third and four situation. Faulkner launched the 32 yard punt. Ponchatoula's defense toughened but the Warriors turned it all loose offensively. Following a I0 play drive, Amite's Mark Wilson picked up the team's third TD of the first quarter. Amite led 21-0 with :44 on the clock. Faulkner handed smoothly to McKay for a four yard gain after the kick but McKay fumbled; fellow Greenie John Brown recovered. Faulkner called the play and the Greenies lined up. On a misdirection play, Faulkner fired one to Brett Chat•- lain. Amite swatted the ball for the first interception of the night. Amite threatened to score in Poncha- toula territory when Robert Terrel scrambled off 18 yards before he met Odes Cooper. Amite QB Michael Carr went long and Clem McKay was sure to pick it off. McKay lost it. Amite kept it out of the air and strapped it to a few 200 pound-plus running backs. Amite pounded away the distance and scored on a one yard hop. The visitors led 26-0. On the flip side, Ponchatoula had possession and Sean Johnson picked up Ponchatoula's premier first down of the game late in the second quarter. Johnson hoisted off 12 yards on that rush, But, Faulkner was sacked and Henry Powell was stopped cold on every rush. Faulkner booted off a 36 yarder. Ponchatoula's defense kept the Warriors from scoring on their next possession. Power plays were executed by Sean Johnson, Clem McKay and Odes Cooper. Amite then punted for the first time of the game. Ponchatoula took over at its own six yard line and a quick handoff to Powell made it second and five. Faulkner went long to Chatelain, to Johnson, and to McKay in an attempt to beat the clock. Faulkner falled . Under heavy pressure, Faulkner Newman scrambles! Jeff Newman (6) barrels upfieid on the opening kickoff to Ponchatoula Thursday, September 19 when the Jv Greenies rest to the homestanding Warriors 15-0. (Times Photo by Duane Harris) spotted Damn- Landry in the open, streaking across the middle in the end zone. Undaunted, Faulkner fired a perfect spike and the speedy-but-heavy Landry picked up the 11 yard connection. It was a big break. Poncha- fouls trailed 34-6 when the two point conversion failed. That was when the bone-crunching began. "Bring down Cart, go for the quarterback," sternly instructed Coach Sidney Wilkinson to Odis Cooper on Amite's next possession. Carr went long and was drilled down by Cooper. Two Amite players lay on the field injured and no flags were thrown. The play repeated itself. Carr drew back long and Cooper nailed him. As a result, Carr picked a fight with Cooper. But Cooper stayed on the field. Darrin Landry forced a fumble and Ponchatoula recovered at the six yard line. The Greenies picked up only two yards in three carries and punted it away at the start of the final period. Amite led 41-6. Ponchatoeda made it to the Amite eight yard marker where it was fumbled. Amite recovered. Shawn Manchette, Eddie LaCroix and Darren Landry drove Amite back for considerable losses. Faulkner went incomplete to Kevin Wells and Odes Cooper before Cooper picked up the first. Handoffs went to Powell and McKay and a Faulkner sneak with :47 remaining in the game put Ponchatoula at the six. Amite had players down on the field. Faulkner drew back. The Warriors were blitzing. Brett Chatelain streaked up the right sideline. Faulkner stepped back to avoid the onrushing linebackers. He placed his feet firmly and threw the ball before he was slammed down. Chatelain was closely guarded. He soared up high and sprinted into the end zone. Faulkner never saw the breathtaking play. Chatelain scored and the two point trick set the score at 41- 14. Ponchatoula attempted an onside kick but the game folded leaving Ponchatoula losing its first game of the session 41-14. Warriors carve out victory over JV Greenies By DUANE E. HARRIS Sport• Editor Ponchatoula's battle in Amite Thurs- day, September 19 had all the suspense of a butcher quartering a steer. However there was little doubt as to who was the butcher and who was the steer when Ponchatoula's JV Greenies lost 15-0. Every time quarterback Carl Disher drew back to pass, there were lineman all over him. Disher was sacked six times as a result. Disher completed Who is Neal Terrebonne? three of 11 passes for 25 yards and rushed 27 yards on the option play. Overall, Merlin Allen led the team in rushing with 28 yards gained on II carries for a 2.5 yard per carry average while quarterback Carl Disher succeeded Allen, rushing 27 yards in five sneaks for a 5.4 yard-per-carry average. Meanwhile, Jason Adams pulled in 22 yards on seven carries for a 3.1 yard per carry average while Shawn Hutson was credited with rushing 12 yards. The JV Greenies totaled I00 yards rushing, added 25 yards passing for 125 yards total offense against Amite. Disher threw one interception while Bradley Watts punted seven times for a 27 yard per punt average. Raymond 5tarkey initiated the assault with the kickoff while Amite was held down for/!o gain on return. Ponchatoula and Amite carved away distance •consecutively on possessions before each was forced to bring in the punting team. On the third possession, Disher realized that his protection had faded. Disher was sacked and he lost turf. Merlin Allen pulled up two yards on the pro-9-21-wag before Disher was sacked again at the Ponchy one yard line. Bradley Watts put Amite at the 32 on his second punt of the game. The assault continued midway (SEEPAGE ELEVEN) THANK YOU TANG I PAHOA !
