Garden Report
By VIOLET COLLIER
Times Garden Editor
The Community Garden Club held
their annual monthly meeting on
September 19 in the club building in
Memorial Park.
A delicious luncheon was served by
the hostesses, Mary Lou Navarre,
Margaret Cutrer, Peggy Avery and
Relia Picou.
The meeting was called to order with
a prayer and the roll call was answered
by each guest with the name of their
favorite shrub.
Minutes of last meetin were read and
accepted. The treasury report was given
by Elaine Ernst.
- Fhe final plans for their trip to North
Carolina were discussed and the
members and the guests will soon be on
their way October 5. All are planning to
have a wonderful week of touring the
Smoky Mountains and enjoying the
beautiful fall foliage and most of all, the
friendship of being with a group of
lovely ladies.

not so much because we need their
volunteer help. But we want visitors to
our river from these cities to become
aware of what we are trying to do.
At Taylor's urging, "the Tangipahoa
Parish Police Jury recently passed a
parish law banning glass containers on
the river. Taylor said the next step
would be to press for a statewide bottle
deposit law that has drastically cut down
on litter and trash in other states.
He said that Saturday, October 12
will be the first annual river cleanup,
with more to follow until the river is
returned to its natural unlittered state.
A party will be held following the
-clean-up at Cherokee Beach for all who
lend a hand, he said.

more docile. The latter take longer to
train and some trainers claim they are
Jess intelligent.
To keep Circus elephants in good
condition they are fed two bales of good
timothy hay each day, a portion of grain
and all the water they can drink. Their
feet are attended to by filing toenails
and trimming their pads. A good
rubbing down with neatsfood oil
occasionally keeps their hide from
getting too dry.
Elephants have figured in history on
many occasions. The Romans used
them in their gory spectacles. In 218
B.C. the 30 year-old Carthaginian
General, Hannibal, moved his troops
along with 37 war elephants, across the
Alps and into Italy. He caught the
Romans by surprise with his awesome
troupe of African elephants heading the
onslaught.
The first elephant arrived in America
in 1796 and caused quite a sensation.
If a Circus elephant is nine feet at the
shoulder and weighs 8,000 pounds it is
considered a mighty big beast.
When an elephant goes to Circus
school it is taught basic commands
given in s]mple words. Repetition of
command and the animal soon gets the
idea.
The basic commands are foot up,
trunk up, lie down, sit up, head down,
and tail up. The latter is extremely
important as when a herd of elephants
is moving out, this routine keeps them
in line and keeps their curious trunks
out of trouble.
Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus over
its history of 98 years has presented to
children of all ages over 1,000
elephants; the wonderful beast that
helps make it the World's Largest Circus
Under the Big Top.
