FROM PGE ONE
600 alligator hides and plans to buy at
least 400 more over the next two
weeks. He says the price per foot of
Louisiana alligator started at $18 to the
alligator hunters (not including the
popular meat). The prices rose to $20
and Young says it's back down now to
$18.
Entirely from a buyer's point of view,
Young says this year's gator hide prices
are healthy for the market: "The price
went to $26 a foot last year and I didn't
buy much."
Young was stirring a pot of his locally-
famous alligator sauce piquante while
talking about Louisiana's Sept. 1-30
alligator season.
"Ponchatoula is still the alligator hide
buying and shipping capital of Louisiana,"
claimed Young, reasoning, "The state
issued 18,000 tags this year, but only
about 16,000 gators were caught, and
our area accounted for a full 1,800 of
these. Of the 16,000 gator hides I will
personally buy 1,000 and others in this
area will buy some. The rest of the
buying is spread all over the southern
part of the state.
Sampling a perfectly seasoned and
sauced morsel of one of Ole Hardhide's
cousins floating in his sauce piquante,
Young said, "My alligator hunters tell
me demand is up for alligator meat this
year, and that it's supposed to taste real
good. Though, of course, I wouldn't
know anything about that," he said,
smiling with satisfaction at the taste of
his "swamp chicken" sauce piquante.
