Last Thursday night more than 300 parents, kindergarten students and citizens interested in education converged on the parish public schools' only Early Learning Center, for open house. The former Perrin Junior High School building on South Eighth and West Ash was renovated during the summer to accommodate all kinder- garten classes. School Board Member Viola Beal said, "This is not an experimental program. Each school district will decide on its kindergarten program. For example, Hammond will have K-6." "All the principals and school board members met and decided it would be best to have all kindergarten students together. It's ideal, all students are the same age," she said. State law requires all students to successfully complete one year of kindergarten before entering first grade: Mrs. Carolyn E. Walker, Principal of the Early Learning Center said, "The 268 kindergarten students will receive letter grades in math, reading, social living, music and art." PTO members conducted a candle sale to raise money for new playground equipment. Mrs. Walker said, "I would like to thank all the merchants, dubs, organiza- tions, and volunteers who helped with the playground equipment." "By October 12, 80 percent of the. new playground equipment should be installed," she said.
