What a difference
a year makes
By JOHN DUDEK
Times Columnist
Last season, the New Or-
leans Saints were without their
head coach, and their defensive
coordinator was non-existent.
Last season, it took the Saints
five tries before they finally
won their first game.
Fortunately, this season, is
nothing like last season.
Head Coach Sean Payton is
back, and new defensive coordi-
nator Rob Ryan has revitalized
his group. Last season, the de-
fense was statistically the worst
in the history of the league. This
season, the defense is ranked in
the Top-5 in all major categories.
If you know the Saints, you
know that it all starts with Sean
Payton and Drew Brees. The
offense has always carried the
team. As usual, Brees has been
fantastic. With this new-look
defense, Brees and the Saints
are looking even better.
After Sunday's 26-18 win
over the Chicago Bears, the
Saints are just one of three un-
defeated teams in the NFL.
The Kansas City Chiefs re-
mained perfect, with a 26-17

As the weather has begun to
show some signs of the impend-
ing Fall season, many local fans
can watch their favorite football
teams engage in good games.
It has been a good week for
local high school teams as well
as Southeastern, Louisiana
State University, Tulane and
our Saints. Many friends and I
support the Southeastern Lions
and have been impressed with
the coaching skills observed and
the skill level of the athletes.
The Lions with some excep-
tional players is a great team to
watch. I know how much many
people enjoy high school foot-
ball and viewing the Tigers and
Saints on television, but one
Thomas Kuhn
really should make the short
drive to Hammond and catch a
Lion's game. You will have an
enjoyable time.
For baseball fans, the play-
offs have begun to determine
who will represent theAmerican
League and National League
