The ball bounced several times in the end zone before Culpeper was able to corral it for the winning margin '•That was definitely where the tide turned against." stated a disappointed Coach Syd Wilkerson "We were winning at the time and were definitely playing well against a team that was ranked ninth in the state coming into the game " "It was a disappointing loss for the teem.'" continued the Green Wave mentor. "'but we're not out of it yet. We have enough character to come back home next week and win against Covington." Ponchatoula held a slightadvantage in play during a scoreless first quarter on a field slippery and muddy from several days' rainfall, and found itself scnmmaging at the Slidell 42-yard line to open the second period Failing to move the ball on a running play in a second and 10 situation. Faulkner tried to pass. Instead, the ball was fumbled and recovered, and Henry Powell was called upon to punt. The ball traveled to the Slidell 16 yard line before going out of bounds. The Tigers mounted the best. and most consistent, offense by either team to that point when quarterback Brad Stuart began to direct an aerial attack to Eddie Miles. Stuart put a mild scare into the Green Wave and its followers when he unleashed a pass from midfield to Miles at the five-yard line. but the ball was slightly overthrown and Slidell was forced to punt Following a series of plays which saw Powell move the ball well for visitors, Ponchatoula was forced to punt from its own 33 yard line. Powell flipped a sidearm pass toward the end zone which found its way into the hands of runningback C)tis C(;oper for the two point conversion The Ponchatoula lead was short lived, however, as Culpeper's recovery of the Green Wave fumble into the end zone on the following series of plays proved to be the winning margin for the Tigers "We knew that we were going up against our toughest opposition to date when we met Ponchatoula. and the outcome was in doubt until the end of the game.'" stated Tigers" coach Wayne Orubb followin 9 the game -They Local gymnasts to host Strawberry Open well.
