Ted DiBiasi on Loranger card
Rogers-Mantell headline
Loranger wrestling card
Heacllining Friday night's wrestling
card at the Loranger Coliseum is a
"Steel Cage" match featuring Tommy
Rogers. one-half of the fabulous "Fan-
tastics", and 'Dirty' Dutch Mantell.
Loser of the match will receive five
lashes with a bullwhip.
Promoter Skeets Hewitt, in conjunction
with Mid-South Wrestling, has put
together an action-filled card featuring
some of the top stars in wrestling today.
Returning to the area is former Mid-
South heavyweight champion Ted
DiBiase in an "anything goes" taped-
fist match against arch-rival 'bruiser' Bob
Sweetan.
Also on the card is Wendall Cooley,
one-half of the Mid-South tag team
champions, against Steve "Dr. Death"
Williams, while his partner AI Perez,
squares off against El Corsario in the
opening bout.
Williams, a former All-America in
both football and wrestling at the
University of Oklahoma, was a "good
guy' when he appeared in Loranger
three years ago, but has sincechanged
his demeanor and is currently one of the
villains.
"We only have four matches on the
card this week," stated Hewitt, "'but
they are all of top calibre. Now that we
are presenting wrestling twice each
month, we hope that we'll be able to
provide the fans with top-notch matches
every two weeks."
The first event is scheduled for 8
p.m., with ticket prices set at $5 for
adults, $3 for children, and ringside
seats selling for $8.

Green Wave to host Lions
in crucial district contest
. Friday night's District 13-AAAA
hatch-up between the Covington Lions
and"-t.he Ponchatoula Green Wave at
Cypress Stadium is a "must-win' situation
for both teams.
Ponchatoula. coming off a heart-
breaking loss last weekend at the hands
of the Slidell Tigers. will be meeting a
formidable foe in the Lions. who
whipped the Mandevflle Skippers 44-6
last Friday night.
Both the Wave and the Lions carry
identical 5-3. I-2 records into the game
which will see the loser eliminated from
possible post-season competition.
Green Wave head coach Syd Wilkerson
had high praise for his charges following
last week's loss. especially for the
defense
"'The team played extremely well.
and with a few breaks the score might
well have been in our favor." stated
Wilkerson "The defense played
exceptionally well and gave up only on
touchdown to a strong Slidell offense
"Although the entire defense
deserves a great deal of credit. I thought
Joe Frazier at defensive end. and line-
backers Henry Powell and Doug
Cowart played standout games,"
continued the Wave mentor. "We'll be
expecting a great deal from flem again
this week ,,hen e meet Covington."
Ponchatouia wiU again be relying
upon quarterback Asa Faulkner to
direct a strong attack against a team
which has been known for its potent
defense
In addition to Powell and Clem
McKay in he fullback and runningback
positions, respectively. Wi[kerson will
call upon split end Brett Chatelain to
Frovide the offense which propelled the
Wave to early-season lopsided wins.
"Our offense sputtered somewhat in
the past two games (a combined total d
1 1 points against Bogalusa and Slidell.].
due mainly to adverse field conditions,
said Wilkerson. "If we can get a drier
field for tomorrow's game. we'll certairj
have a better chance to put more points
on the board."
The Wave defense will face a Multiple
T offense from the Lions. featuring J.P.
Stilwell at quarterback and Sylvester
Brumfield at tailback.
Stilwell has already passed for more
than I000 yards this season, with his
prime target split end Ronald Bahem.
The agile receiver has been the recipient
of 20 Stilwell tosses for more than 350
yards to date.
Brumfield. who sat out last week'5
game against Mandeville due to a minor
leg injury, has gained nearly 700 yards
rushing heading into tomorrow
contest.
Defensively. the Lions will use a siX-
man front anchored by Travis Core at
one of the end positions.
Lions' head coach Jack Salter gdll
rely heavily on Bryant Bagent (6-I, 195}
and David Wagner (5-10. 175) in the
linebacker slots to give support to a
strong Covington defense.
"These young men work well
together and have given our defenS
solid support all season." stated Salter
"We also have a fine young defender i
, Ronald Baham in the safety position."
' "We are looking for a very tough
game Friday. especially with so much at
stake." continued the Lions" mentOr-
"They, are a well-coached team and
have an extremely good offense,
centered around Powell. McKay, an
Faulkner. They move the ball as well as
any team in the district."
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
