'Dirty' Dutch Mantell got more than
he bargained for when he stepped into
the ring twice at the Loranger Coliseum
last Fridav night•
Mantell, who replaced the missing El
Corsario in the second match on the
card, recorded a pin-fall over A1 Perez,
one half of the Mid-South tag-team
wrestling champions. However. the
referee reversed the decision and
awarded the victory to Perez after the
crowd pointed out the fact that Mantell

had recorded his "victory' by choking his
opponent,
The real reason for El Corsario's
absence from the match was not clear,
but it is believed that he may have been
a victim of misinformation which led
him to believe that the matches had
been postponed due to the recent
flooding caused by hurricane Juan.
In the opening bout, Steve 'Dr.
Death' Williams needed only 12
minutes to defeat Wendall Cooley: the
other half of the Mid-South tag team
champions with his famed 'Oklahoma
Stampede'.
Cooley was no match for the former
All-America in both football and
wrestling while attending the University
of Oklahoma.
In a special taped-fist match, Ted
DiBiasi and 'Bruiser' Bob Sweetan
renewed their long-standing feud in a
bout which saw DiBiasi defeat his
opponent nearly 22 minutes into the
match.
With the referee having been
rendered senseless, DiBiasi reverted to
his evil ways by using an illegal glove,
taken from his wrestling tights, to knock
Sweetan senseless.
In the main event, Mantell squared
off against Tommy Rogers. one of the
'Fantastics', in a special steel cage match
with the loser to receive five lashes with
a bullwhip.
Rogers recorded a pin-fall over
Mantell about 18 minutes into the
match, but when the time came for the
victor to give Mantell his just dues,
Mantell climbed over the top of the steel
fence and scampered to the safety of
the dressing room. For this cowardly (or
self-preserving) act, Mid-South officials
fined him $5000.
Promoter Skeets Hewitt was
informed following the card that Mid-
South. due to complicated commitments,
would not have wrestlers available for
the scheduled Nov. 15 bouts at the
Coliseum.
"It certainly came as a great surprise
when I was informed of the change of
events," stated Hewitt following the
matches. "I really don't know when my
next card will be held. It looks as if it
won't be until sometime next month."
Brett Chatelain was in the right place
at the right time Friday night, and
Coach Syd Wilkinson, the Green
Wave, and all of their followers were
happy that he was.
Chatelain was positioned just inside
the Covington end zone when Poncha-
toula quarterback Asa Faulkner's
fumble landed at his feet. Before any of
the defenders had a chance to react,
Chatelain fell on the loose ball for what
proved to be the winning touchdown in
a 13-7 victory over the Lions in a
District 13-AAAA contest at Cypress
Stadium.
The victory kept the Wave's playoff
chances alive, but drove the final spike
into the Lions' coffin for the 1985
season. The win gave Ponchatoula the
opportunity to control its own destiny
when it meets the Hammond Tots this
Friday in Hammond. The win also gave
the Wave a 2-2 record in district play
and 6-3 overall. The loss dropped the
Lions to 1-3 in district and 5-4 overall.
As expected, both defenses
controlled the play in the early going,
with Ponchatoula coming up strong on
four separate occasions when the Lions
were knocking on the door. At the other
end of the field, Covington thwarted a
Green Wave scoring opportunity
following the opening kickoff when the
defense held on a fourth-and-one
situation.
Playing under conditions reminiscent
of those in games against Bogalusa and
Slidell, both offenses managed to move
the ball well. However, sustained drives
fell prey to even more sustained
defenses.
Both teams played through a
scoreless first quarter with Ponchatoula
holding a slight advantage offensively,
while both defenses held firmly when
under heavy pressure.
Covington had an opportunity to
score early in the second quarter when
quarterback J.D. Stilwelt marched his
charges down to the Green Wave 13-
yard line when the offense turned the
ball over to Ponchatoula following a
missed field goal attempt off the toe of
Gary Nordgen.
The Wave managed to move the ball
to their own 42 yard line before Henry
Powell was forced to punt.
Stilwell, with the help of tailback
moved the Lions to the eight-yard line
before scampering around left end for
the game's first score. Nordgen added
the extra point to give the visitors a 7-0
lead at the half.
Ponchatoula runningback Clem
McKay injured his left shoulder during
the second quarter and sat out the
second half. The injury was later
diagnosed as only a bruise, and the
speedy back is expected to be in the
lineup tomorrow when the Wave plays
Hammond.
The Green Wave opened the third
quarter with an onside kick. However,
the ball did not travel the necessary I0
yards and Powell was forced to rekick

offensive drive alive late in last Friday's
Early in the quarter. Powell recovered
a Covington fumble at the Ponchatoula
42 yard line, but turned the ball back to
the visitors moments later as he fumbled
at the Lions' 48.
Neither team was able to sustain a
drive during the next six minutes of the
quarter until the offensive line opened a
gaping hole on the right side and Powell
exploded on a trap play to go all the
way for an 82-yard touchdown romp.
His point-after attempt was successful
and the game was tied 7-7. The Poncha-
toula fans came alive at that point and
began to sense that the Green Waye just
might have the horses to pull an upset
over the visiting Lions.
13-7 victory ever the Covington Lions
at Cypress Stadium. Defensive backs
Tim Moore (12) and John Gallo (27)
eventually ran Brown out of bounds
*'The run of Henry's was definitely
one of the big offensive plays of the
game for us," said Wave coach Syd
Wilkinson following the victory. "'There
were several big plays, but that run
certainly gave us a great deal of
momentum when we really needed it."
Both teams had opportunities during
the fourth quarter to add to their totals,
but the defenses on both sides of the
line came up big. It wasn't until the 6:54
mark of the period that the Wave was
able to break the tie on Chatelain's
fumble recovery.
