# 3! !:!i Lions score 18-13 victory over JV Wave It hasn't been an exceptionally good year for the Ponchatoula Green Wave JVs, but assistant coach Fred Booth feels that a win over the Hammond Tors next Tuesday at Cypress Stadium will J give his charges a feeling of having captured a "state championship". Coming off an 18-13 loss to undefeated Covington last week. the JVs will be gearing up for the baby Tors in a game originally scheduled for today in the Strawberry capital. "There has always been a strong rivalry between Ponchatoula and Hammond, and Tuesday's game will be no exception," stated Booth following last week's contest. "It will be a big win for our fellows if they can beat the Tors, and will give them a strong sense of pride on which to end the season." Covington, which has captured the District 13-AAAA JV title with wins over all of its opponents to date, scored single touchdowns in each of the first three quarters to earn the victory. All conversion attempts failed. ' The Wave, trailing 12-0 in the second quarter, narrowed the score to a 12-7 when quarterback Carl Disher hit flanker Bradley Watts with a 15-yard strike with less than two minutes remaining in the half. Raymond Starkey was successful with the extra-point attempt. Trailing 18-7 with just over seven minutes to play in the game, Watts was once again on the receiving end of a Disher aerial for a 25-yard score. Disher's pass to Johnny Settoon went incomplete when the Wave attempted a two-polnt conversion. The loss dropped Ponchatoula to 2-2 in district competition and 4-4 overall. With more than 350 gymnasts competing in the two-day Strawberry Open Meet at the Ponchatoula Community Center last weekend, the competition was almost non-stop. (Times Photo by Gordon Fenny) • Football FROM PAGE ELEVEN Covington had an opportunity to score late in the game when Stilwell directed the Lions down to the Wave 15 yard line. With a four-and-long yardage situation facing him, Stilwetl rolled left on an option play but was sacked by defensive end Joe Frazier on a game- ending tackle. "The big run of PoweWs changed the momentum of the game in their favor," stated Covington coach Jack Salter. "We certainly had our chances to score, especially in the first half, but we weren't able to put the points on the board. We had the edge in time of possession, but that doesn't count in the standings." Powell led all rushers with 119 on 12 carries, while Reggie McKay led the Lions' with 100 on 19 rushes. The Lions picked up 10 first downs to Ponchatoula's nine, and edged the Wave 186-184 in rushing yardage. The Wave had a big edge in passing yardage, gaining 109 yards as Faulkner connected on seven of 11 attempts and had one intercepted. Stilwell was good on five of 12 attempts for 63 yards and had none intercepted. Powell punted twice for a 38-yard average, while Nordgen punted twice for a 32-yard average. Both teams fumbled once. with the opposition recovering both times. The Wave was penalized a total of 30 yards, while the Lions were only tagged with a 10-yard walk-off.
