attempt failed.
The scoring play was set up when
kick-off return specialist Jo Jo Davis
slipped at his own three-yard line,
leaving the Dogs in poor field position.
Springfield finally found its legs in the
second quarter when it exploded for
two unanswered touchdowns, the
second of which proved to be the game-
winner.
"We had a long bus ride to get to the
game." stated West. "and the fellows
really didn't feel loose during the first
quarter. They finally got rolling in the
second stanza and proved their mettle."
The Dogs got on the board when
Connell took a pitchout from Kennedy
and dashed eight yards for paydirt.
Charles Ridgedell's point-after attempt
was blocked, but the visitors had pulled
to within a touchdown of their hosts.
Springfield scored what proved to be
the margin of victory when senior tight
end Darryl Freeman blasted into the
end zone from one yard out. Connell
went over for the two-point conversion
on the succeeding play to give the Dogs
a 14-12 lead at the half.
Following the break, Springfield
picked up where it had left off as
Freeman plunged in from two yards out
to extend the lead to 20-12. Kennedy
made it 22-12 when he rambled in on a
