Times interview with Giovanna
Clausen, owner of Clausen Racing
Times Report
The late Floyd Clausen regarded racing as a fun hobby when
he started his family racecar-related company in the 1980's. He
realized Independence would make a good home base. Thirty five
miles to the north they had races in Pike County, to the west, Ba-
ton Rouge has a dirt track and a drag strip, to the east in St. Tam-
many Parish's Lacombe there were regular races.
Mr. Clausen worked offshore.
We are family-owned, said Mrs.
Clausen, commenting that her
granddaughter Samantha is a
junior at St. Thomas Aquinas
and is learning the business.
"My house is behind the store,
Floyd has his on the other side
of the store. Two of my sisters
live in the neighborhood," she
added.
One non-family member,
John Hurst, has been workihg
at Clausen Racing for 28 years.
"The day he got out of high
school he came looking for a job.
John is an ordained preacher in
New Orleans where he builds
heavy-duty playground equip-
ment.
"For a while we had our gro-
cery store on one side of the
building and our race stuff on
"Clausen Racing pulls from
all the Southern states. Cus-
tomers have known us for
years. They know they will get
the right part in a timely fash-
ion. We do phone orders and In-
ternet sales, but our main sales
site is our Independence store,"
Mrs. Clausen told The Indepen-
dence Times in an interview.
The former Giovanna Arnone
says she and her husband got
started in business buying and
selling salvage groceries.
"We had an old motor home
that could pull the race car that
my husband raced. I would sell
parts out of that motor home.
Back in Independence, we sold
out of our garage. That was be-
fore the era of Walmart," she
laughed.
"I was always in charge of
retail. I grew up in business.

Giovanna Clausen is also
active with the Italian Heri-
tage Museum, housed in the
old Mater Dolorosa Church. "It
had been gathering mice, dust,

claim it and clean it.
"The church had three altars
which gave us a great challenge
in terms of renovating. People
are still donating items to the
museum we started there," she
said with obvious pride in her
church community.

Forcing Bulbs
By SANDRA BENJAMIN
Tangipahoa Extension
Agent
Forcing means bringing a
plant into flower earlier or at a
time of the year that may not be
its normal flowering time. Many
spring flowering bulbs can be
forced including hyacinths,
crocus, daffodils (especially
the miniatures), tulips, brodi-
aea, Dutch iris, Asiatic lilies,
muscari, ornithogalum, scilla,
paperwhite narcissus, oxalis,
and amaryllis. The hyacinths,
paperwhites, and amaryllis are
foolproof, and are most recom-
mended for the novice.
All of the above bulb, ex-
cept paperwhites and anaryb
lis, should be refrigerated from
November until early January.
At that time, place them in con-
tainers partially filled with a
well-drained potting soil so that
there are enough to fill the pot
without touching each other or
the pot sides. Finish filling the
pot with soil so that the bulbs
are just below the soil surface
(generally, pointy end up).
Water well and place the pots
in a cool (about 50 degrees),
dark location until about an
inch or two of growth appears.
At that time move the pots to
a sunny, cool location. Outside
locations usually work best. Too
much warmth or not enough
light will produce tall, spindly
plants with small flowers or
none at all.
Hyacinths may be forced in
soil, or buried half deep in a
dish of pebbles filled
with enough water to touch
the base of the bulbs or even in
just water using special hya-
cinth vases. They are very fra-
grant in bloom.
When the flower buds begin
to show color, you may move the
pot to a suitable location in your
home for display, however, the
cooler you keep the plants, the
longer the flowers last (usually
about 10 days). Make sure they
receive an even supply of mois-
ture during growing and bloom-
ing.
Paperwhites and amaryl-
lis do not need cold treatment,
and so can be forced as soon as
bulbs are obtained. Otherwise,
grow paperwhites as you would
hyacinths - sunny, cool in soil or
pebbles. Amaryllis must be pot-
ted in soil and should be grown
at average room temperature in
a sunny location.
Flowering for most of these
bulbs occurs four to six weeks
after forcing begins. Generally,
most bulbs should be discarded
after forcing.
Amaryllis should not be dis-
carded. After flowering, cut off
the flower stalk and continue to
grow the plant as a pot plant or
plant outside in March. In both
situations, it should bloom in
spring each year.
'Toys from the
heart' brings joy
to area children
SLU Report
Many Southeastern Louisi-
ana University student organi-
zations have found that noth-
ing warms the heart more than
giving the gift of joy to a young
child.
For the eighth consecutive
year, Southeastern's Kappa
Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta
sorority, Zeta Phi Beta soror-
ity, Gamma Beta Phi honor and
service society, and the Student
United Way will do just that by
giving "Toys from the Heart" to
underprivileged children in the
local community.
Teaming with Recreational
Sports and Wellness, the Office
of Multicultural and Interna-
tional Student Affairs (MISA),
and the Student Athletic Advi-
sory Committee, the organiza-
tions expect to collect enough
toys for 400 children this holi-
day season.
Summers said the students
are asking the to make a dona-
tion of a toy or a monetary do-
nation toward the purchase of a
new toy.
New, unwrapped toys may
be delivered to donation boxes
located in the Student Union
Mall from 10 a.m. to i p.m. on
Nov 18-21, Nov. 26-29, and Dec.
2-4. Donation boxes will also
be located at the MISA office
in Mims Hall, room 213, and
inside the Pennington Student
Activity Center.
For more information about
"Toys from the Heart," contact
the MISA office at (985) 549-
3850.
